an AU changes important things about them - their background or their decisions or something that's central to who they are, and so they can never be those exact characters that we love.

You could be right... SGA is rife with AUs. Some of them work, a lot of them don't. And all too often I think, this is a good story but these aren't the characters I fell in love with.

I think your Miss P worked in that scenario - but Jarod loses something of his wide-eyed innocence when he's working for the government. I don't know... Curious.
