on writing yuletide
Just some thoughts on writing this yuletide, behind the cut.
When I received my assignment for yuletide, I only had one match. Stick It, for which I had selected any, working on the assumption that it is a teen movie about gymnasts; like similar movies to come before it (Bring It On, for example), surely the interest would lie with the girlslash pairings. It was to my astonishment that I read my assignment: Burt/Hayley; a crush on Hayley's part.
It was unexpected, yes, and it was a challenge but then, yuletide always has been. I enjoyed rewatching the movie, and as I did, I realised all the things I could write about Burt, and Hayley, and the girls at the VGA, and in the end I'm really pleased with how the fic turned out. The finished product was The Dust Building Up at Our Feet, and I loved writing the supporting characters, Joanne and Poot and Wei-Wei and the rest, but I loved writing Hayley most of all. She's fun, for all she's not my favourite character.
After, flush with success, and still a little upset that I'd not had the chance to write for one of my favourite fandoms (The Pretender, or Narnia, or Dune), I decided to try for a pinch hit. The pinch hit I wrote was On a Road to Wherever, about Laura from The Changeover, which is a book written by Margaret Mahy. After my initial panic (I thought that I had lost my copy), I zoomed through writing this fic. Eventually, I had to cut a little over five hundred words from the end of the fic, because to keep those words there would actually have required me to write a lot more. So that was a surprise, that I was brimming over with stories to write, about Winter's secrets and Laura and Sorry learning to live and Jacko, getting to grow up.
So, I guess the summary is that I had a great time with yuletide this year!
