fandom, careful, or you'll be sleeping on the couch

OKAY WAIT NO.

Things About Fandom, Part Two (you can find part one here):

  1. If you want me to read something you've written, or (in the context of me being an editor of a fandom newsletter) you want me to link to something you've written, you have to give me the link. When you say, "I've posted DY in my journal, if you're interested," then you'll find I'm really not that interested. WHEN I SAY LINK ME, LINK ME.

  2. Manips are, for the most part, ugly. I hate them.

  3. Number three today is the same as number three last time, to whit: I wonder if some people are watching the same show as me. How can I be watching the same show as people whose reaction to the THING in Scar was to be pissed off at Lee for not holding Kara, who clearly needed a cuddle? Because apparently Kara would have fought with him, but eventually she would have settled down and if he'd just have held her, he could have held her gently and then maybe they could have had soft loving sex HELLO I'M SORRY WHAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOU WHEN YOU MUMBLE AROUND THE CRACK PIPE IN YOUR MOUTH.

  4. Fen are capable of producing some really ugly things. And I feel like, when I link to things at [livejournal.com profile] galacticanews, much as I have to say "warning for spoilers" or "not safe for work," I should also have to say," warning for ugliness." But I can't, and that's annoying.

  5. New fen in Narnia fandom. I'm not going to get all, "I have been here for years, bitches," or anything like that, because that's not what this is about. This is about how, NOBODY NEEDS TO READ YOUR WILLIAM MOSELEY/OC FIC, HOKAY? and also about how the Pevenscest used to be awesome when it was understated and nobody ever, ever actually wrote about it obviously. And now it's all, "and Peter's mouth sought hers" and I actually, literally cringe. I can't stop. BUT YOU CAN. STOP, FANDOM, STOP.

  6. Koalas ARE NOT BEARS, OKAY? [livejournal.com profile] koalathebear, this is not directed at you. I JUST NOW read someone talking "a koala bear" and then I was hesitant and shy when I was pointing it out. Why was I shy? PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW THESE THINGS.

  7. Why should I be shy? If I've done something wrong, tell me, okay? And if you've done something wrong, I'll tell you, and we'll all be happy together. Or something.

  8. Anonymous comments. FUCK YOU, ANONYMOUS COMMENTERS. If you can't say it to my face, then you suck. SUCK.

OKAY WHATEVER.

PS I'M TOTALLY NOT SORRY FOR SPAMMING YOU TODAY.

PS I'M TOTALLY NOT SORRY FOR SPAMMING YOU TODAY.

HAHA! I love you for everything in this post, but especially that. :P

[identity profile] bantha-fodder.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
YOU KNOW YOU LOVE IT.

So, how come you're not getting in on the Choose Your Own Adventure loving, huh? DO YOU NOT LOVE ME ANYMORE?

[identity profile] roz-mcclure.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
NO I TOTALLY DO NOT!

and also I was eating dinner with my roommates. WHATEVER (MARRIAGE), DUDE. WHATEVER!

[identity profile] angualupin.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
But on the plus side, I think you rock awesomeness, like an awesome rocky thing.

Right.

Three makes me cry.

YAY FOR SPAM! See, I could never deal with the CYOA books because I obsessively tried to read every possible path until I lost track of any sort of plot (and life), but it's actually working this time! *dances*

[identity profile] eldritch-flame.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I would actually write down every path on a sheet of paper, so that I could be sure I'd read every possible permutation of the story. I only did it for a couple of books, though, since it was a lot of work, and got to be just a little boring after a while.

#1) Yes, yes, yes, yes!

#2) Eh. I like some manips (but not the kind which are done to graft character's faces onto porn actors bodies in midscene).

#3) Well, of course we are not all watching the same show! Didn't you realize that TPTB have filmed and sent out individuated copies of the episodes to every fan? So what you see is wrong because I saw what I saw and I'm right, neener-neener!

#4) It's not the art that bothers me so much as the bad writing. Gah!

#5-7) I wish you luck!

#8) Oh, yeah!

[identity profile] sideofzen.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm exactly the opposite. It's easier to ignore the bad writing.

The art is just there and in your face.

[identity profile] queenofthorns.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, re: #3, YOU HAVE TO PROVIDE LINKS! Hee! Errrm, what? A cuddle? What? (My eye is twitching here, and I think it might be related...)

[identity profile] rawles.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't want to see it. TRUST ME YOU JUST DON'T.

It's scarring.

[identity profile] queenofthorns.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you just can't hint like this and then not deliver! Come on, I'm made of STERN stuff, you know :P

[identity profile] hobviously.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHAHA.

I disagree passionately with #4. I have the [livejournal.com profile] narnian_herald on my flist for the sole purpose of bringing me at least one William Moseley/OC fic per day. As you know, I struggle with depression. And sometimes I get pretty sad and/or angry. It is at these low points of my day that I try to inject an RPF Sue tale of the world's most perfect boyfriend, who just happens to be a celebrity, and loves Sue/Eryn/Clarissa/Dewfrost with all his heart, and has apparently stolen all of her powers of grammar and spelling. RPF Sues bring such joy and laughter to my life. I love them immensely. Please, Narnia fandom, ignore Pen and her love of quality. Pander only to me and my addiction to badfic starring yourselves and your hilarious misconceptions of English teenagers.

Also, since writing Suefic for your friends seems to be the convention in the fandom, reallyreally terrible Tris/William would not go amiss.

[identity profile] hobviously.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
EXCEPT, that is actually #5. #4 I agree with. Hobviously!

[identity profile] bantha-fodder.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG I CANNOT STOP LAUGHING.

Tris, don't tempt me. Because I could totally write this story about how William was going to America to film a movie! And one day he was just walking down the street (to get to Starbucks, he likes hot chocolate with little marshmallows in it), and he saw you on your way to school one day, and he just had to stop you and tell you how beautifulful you are! And you were wearing this very attractive new hat, and some very cute boots, and William is pretty cute, so you were super chuffed! And he invited you to come visit him on the set! And when he met your parents they were very charming, and he was very charming, and you all got along fabulously. So he invited you to go to the premiere of his new movie with him!

?OMG I CAN'T DO THIS TO US, TRIS. IT HURTS TOO MUCH.

[identity profile] resmin.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You win on icons today.

Relatedly, I am reading a DVD-type Dune book right now and I couldn't help but think of you. It's basically Herbert's original outline and cast offs that his son and Anderson(?) compiled into a v large hardback. There was a fascinating Irulan chapter (that might have been).

Finally, your caps make me grin.

[identity profile] bantha-fodder.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! An Irulan chapter that was not? TELL ME MORE.

I'm glad you like my caps. I always worry that they're over the top.

[identity profile] resmin.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not a happy chapter.

No seriously, it's really NOT a happy chapter. Still interested?

I like caps, they make me giggle. Then again I read them in this strange Kent Brockman-esque manner. *g*

[identity profile] bantha-fodder.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! I am indeed still interested. Irulan, in all her good and bad, intrigues me.

[identity profile] resmin.livejournal.com 2006-02-26 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Edric (the Navigator who gets trapped by Alia), the Reverend Mother and Irulan are all sitting in jail talking. It's just after Chani died and Irulan is going on about being his wife (and all that that entails (read=sex)). Meanwhile Edric is kind of obliquely saying "You should go. No really, you should go." but not in any sort of way to make things understood. The Reverend Mother eventually picks up on what he's saying but by then its too late. A mob attacks the jail, kills the guards and tears the three beings limb from limb. It is assumed that the mob blames Irulan for Chani's death (even though the reader knows this is not true).

However, the final line of the chapter mentions the Reverend Mother sacrificing herself to save Irulan. So it's sad yet uplifting.

I really do reccommend the book. A very fascinating look at the entire universe.

#3: Wanna know a secret? I heart you and your [livejournal.com profile] galacticanews co-editor-people, but I only ever check out the media sections anymore because I can't stand to read most of the meta. And I used to read every single post that was linked. People are hateful and/or annoying.
#5: Reading the 'cest comment made me think of this thread, which I thought was well done. And, uh, all your borderline-cest. I may kid around about it a lot to hide my discomfort or something psychological, but you do it well.
#6: I can't help it, it isn't my fault. I don't think I can ever de-program the "bear" from "koala." But then again, I never talk about freaking koala bears, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

[identity profile] bantha-fodder.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't read the posts I link to, half the time. Just too frustrating for me. And to think, I used to LOVE BSG meta, but that was back when we were talking about whether or not Apollo wears underwear, and about the sekrit black market to provide Starbuck with floaty dresses.

See, even that thing you linked to is a little too much for me, but that's probably because it's very wordy about the emotions, and I'm always like, BLAH EMOTIONS WHATEVER.

OMG I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR PROGRAMMING.

[identity profile] gobsmackit.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
UCH FINE HAVE NO SOUL. I suppose that's why I like you, anyway. Or something.

I think you're kind of funny, BITCH! Suck on that!

[identity profile] spectralbovine.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
(Hey, someone had to make some sort of anonymous comment joke. It might as well be a friend of [livejournal.com profile] rawles you don't even know, right? RIGHT?!)

Koalas are marsupials, but the phrase "koala bear" is so cute. Like panda bear and polar bear and...some other cute bear that won't tear your throat out. TEDDY BEAR!

you're too damn clever, vaquilla

Re #4: I think warnings for ugliness would be good, but I've just learned to avoid certain things altogether.

[identity profile] thirteenthchime.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I second a ugliness warning for links, but only because often I am too idiotic and naive to avoid such things most of the time.

Thpt :P

OMG I totally just said no. Do not feel oppressed! We must teach the world that koalas are marsupials!

Manipulations can be pretty! I like this icon :D

NOBODY NEEDS TO READ YOUR WILLIAM MOSELEY/OC FIC, HOKAY?

Amen. My god there is some awful, awful, AWFUL stuff. There's some really, really TERRIBLE Robert Pattinson/OC fic there. The same person wrote a Robert Pattinson/Daniel Radcliffe/OC fic and the Mary Sue was so obvious - the author even used her own name. Eeeeeeeeeeek!!!!!! I have no problem with people writing it but why can't they keep their sexual fantasies to themselves :P

[identity profile] eldritch-flame.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
2. WORD. Manips set my teeth on edge. Kind of like watching movies that use a green screen instead of an actual set, only more unsettling.
3. That's... what the hell? Kara just needs to be cuddled the way an angry drunk she-lion with a toothache just needs to be cuddled.
5. WORD AGAIN. Although, i don't like the understated Pevenscest, either. I only liked it when I was completely unaware of its existence. So traumatizing. My poor childhood innocence.
6. This I did not know. Although in my defense, I don't think I've ever really had cause to discuss Koalas. Hmm. Must remedy that.

[identity profile] bantha-fodder.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
They are marsupials.

UGH MANIPS. SO UGLY.

[identity profile] skwidfan.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
I got directed here from [livejournal.com profile] koalathebear

*giggles inanely* You are so right! Narnia was a fun fandom before tromping fangirls entered, now it's getting a case of Harry Potter!fanfic and it'll get worse with each movie.

*blush* I used to like Pevencest.. but yeah... It's all squicky now.. >.< and in general nobody needs to read Oc fics from narnia (and if you don't believe me I found a fun thing on ff.net that mocks it :) )

Anyways, brightly brilliant post.

[identity profile] storydivagirl.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
Enjoyed your list. Completely in agreement on # 8 especially. It's really brave to post things anonymously. Even on those memes where people *want* you to comment stuff about them/their writing/whatever anonymously, I don't feel comfortable (and hence don't partake)

[identity profile] theblackdoll.livejournal.com 2006-02-22 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This is about how, NOBODY NEEDS TO READ YOUR WILLIAM MOSELEY/OC FIC, HOKAY? and also about how the Pevenscest used to be awesome when it was understated and nobody ever, ever actually wrote about it obviously.

THANK YOU. The lack of subtlety shown by some members of the fandom kills me. And not in a good way.
