1. when he was brought to the camp he was cold, so cold; the endless winter might have been fading, but the witch's chill had penetrated to his bones, and not even aslan's breath could warm him. he wrapped his arms around himself and trudged down the hill, and peter looked at him with such a peter face, and he flinched away from susan but lucy wouldn't be deterred: she wrapped her arms around him and tucked her head under his chin, and when he kissed the top of her hair he felt warm inside.

2. she held the bottle over his lips and allowed a drop to fall. she watched and watched and watched until aslan scolded her, but she saw him blink before she turned away and she knew he would be okay.

3. he thought perhaps he was going mad, king of narnia stuck in a little boy's body. he wore paint on his face because kings of narnia did that, and he wore perfumes on his body because kings of narnia did that, too, and no one ever knew he was only fifteen when he went out because he wasn't, not really, and when he came home she looked at him and her face fell. "oh, edmund," she said, and the next time he took her with him.

5. he heard a cough in the darkness. "lu?" he asked. "oh, ed," she replied, her voice breathless. "do you know what's going on?" "i have no idea," he replied, "and it's awfully dark." lucy laughed. "i do hope you're not afraid, ed," she said, and he felt her warm hand curl around his. "i just worried about you," he said, and she laughed again.
