five times jessica is worried about her grandchildren FOR FAHYE

1. "paul is gone," gurney says, something she has known for twenty years. "he has gone out to the desert. but his children remain." jessica leans forward. "children?" she asks. "leto," he says, "and ghanima, and none but irulan to look after them." "and alia," she says, half to herself, and is afraid.

2. the twins visit caladan for the first time when they are five. "oh, grandmother," ghanima says, "how i long to feel the spray of the surf upon my face." they run through the palace, and she falls behind; she looks for them on the cameras, but they only appear in fleeting glimpses, as if they know which corridors to avoid to stay out of her gaze. she finds them eventually, on the beach favoured by her son, rolling in the sand. "oh, paul," she says, aloud; wonders what he has done.

3. "you see what i must put up with, mother, to be surrounded by such fools?" jessica looks at her daughter; sees the red behind her eyes and familiarity of her tone. when she turns her head and meets leto's eyes, he nods at her and ushers his sister away.

4. ghanima stands there in the fremen wedding garb, spoil of no war but the one she has chosen to fight, her crysknife loosely tucked into her belt. beside her, leto roars, and the sound of the worms echoes through the chamber.

5. she looks for her grandchildren; finds them in the throne room, leto's head pillowed by ghanima's thigh. "do you remember the water?" ghanima asks softly. "of course i do, sister," leto replies, though ghanima could be talking of any water, of any world. ghanima leans down, kisses her brother's forehead, shuts her eyes. "tell me of the waters of your homeland," she says, in a whisper, and jessica's stomach drops.

she knows the truth of it, but she pushes the suspicion down to where there is no abomination, no fear.

she breathes out; is bene gesserit.

there is no fear.
