Further Narnia fic, for this week's picture at [livejournal.com profile] 15minuteficlets

Caspian has sailed to the End of the World, but he dares not sail beyond. He has too much to do in the world that we all know: Narnia is his charge, and he will not neglect it. He has a wife and a child as well, now, and he must look after all of his responsibilities. He will not neglect the gifts that he has been blessed with.

The End of the World calls loudly to him. Reepicheep chose not to ignore that call, and has left his duties to Narnia behind him. Reepicheep, loyal as any mouse has ever been, has betrayed Narnia and it is his own grievous fault. Reepicheep will never need to forgive himself, but Narnia will not forgive such treachery.

The End of the World changes its call to suit its needs. Yesterday it tried to seduce Caspian with the voices of King Edmund the Just and Queen Lucy the Valiant; today it calls him roughly but fairly with the voice of his father, King Caspian IX. Tomorrow, it will beg him with the voice of his wife and later, with the voice of his son, but he will ignore its temptations. None of its vagaries and inconsistencies are worth sacrificing Narnia for.

The Land Across the Sea beckons to him as it beckons to all, but he will be strong. He will be strong for Narnia. He will not sacrifice himself to the vague promises of Aslan and eternal happiness beyond the End of the World; not at the expense of Narnia.

Narnia is all there is, and all there ever will be. It is for the best that Caspian makes himself comfortable where he is King, than risk it all for a place where he will be no better than anyone else.
