SVU AU game: Off 'Redemption;' They don't catch the serial killer, and Hawk stays around.

**

"I like that in a woman," says Hawk. No point in pussy-footing around the issue.

"What?" asks Stabler, but Hawk knows Stabler's just stalling for time.

"Cold, but hot," Hawk says, and motions across the room to Benson, just walking through the doors to the precinct.

Stabler glowers.

*

"I'm sick of it!" Stabler yells, and Hawk grins. Cragen's reply is a murmur through the closed door, but Hawk assumes Cragen's not taking it too well.

Hawk makes notes on a file. A close inspection of the file would reveal the notes to be nonsense, but he's used to looking like he's busy, and he has no intention of showing the file to anyone else. Paperwork is useless. Legwork is the only thing that gets results.

"We're not getting anywhere!" Hawk looks up when Stabler yells again. Benson's staring at the door like maybe she can see Stabler through it.

Hell, maybe she can. The two of them are weird.

*

They get a lead, and Hawk's halfway down the hall before he realises Stabler's not walking beside him. He turns and strides back, and sure enough, Stabler's stopped to whisper sweet nothings in Benson's ear.

"Stabler!" Hawk yells. "You coming, or am I going by myself?"

Stabler and Benson both give him a glare, and exchange looks, before Stabler pushes away from her chair and catches up to Hawk.

Stabler doesn't offer an explanation. Hawk's not surprised.

*

Hawk knocks softly on the door. An ant could knock harder. "Hello, police," he says in soft voice. "What a shame," he says to Elliot. "They're refusing cops entry." He slams his body against the door, and the cheap lock gives way. Cheap neighbourhood, cheap lock, cheap door. He's not surprised to find a cheap woman in the bed of their suspect. "Police!" he yells, waving his gun in one hand and his badge in the other. The chick in the bed freaks out and shrieks, although he's obviously not about to use the gun one handed. Women.

Stabler lifts the suspect out of the bed, and pushes him against the wall. Starts Mirandarising in low, suspicious undertones. Won't let the guy put on a shirt, but will let him cover his family jewels.

Hawk thinks maybe he's starting to like Stabler.

He lets the chick leave. He's not a complete asshole.

*

The drive back to the station would be silent if the guy in the back would just shut up.

"I didn't do it," he says nervously. "I was home all day. All week! My neighbour saw me." They let the guy babble. Hawk's pretty sure he's not their guy, but he's probably guilty of something. Most guys are.

*

Stabler pushes the guy up against a wall, and it's pretty clear he knows something. The guy, not Stabler, although if Stabler was a dirty cop, it wouldn't come as a complete surprise to Hawk. Three minutes of Stabler pushing this guy up against the glass, with Hawk leering in the background, and he's so weak he spills. He covered for this guy who did this thing what wanted a favour and on and on blah blah blah.

Whatever. Punks are so fucking weak. Not like they used to be.

There's a part of him that's happy about that, too.

*

They catch the killer, and when they bring him in, Stabler pauses by his desk and bends his mouth to Benson's neck. Ear. All of her.

Hawk lets it go. If Stabler doesn't want to interrogate the guy, would rather play footsies with Benson, that's his problem.

*

Stabler buys Hawk a beer before he goes back to his own precinct.

"So, you and Benson," Hawk starts.

"No," says Stabler, "drink your beer."

Later, bar filled with cops, Hawk watches Benson and Stabler leave together, and he's not stupid. He knows what that means.

Fucking SVU.
