This should have been a birthday present for [livejournal.com profile] esso, but it all got a bit heterosexual, so she'll just have to wait.

When the cadres come to punish Cho's mother, Cho is playing with another girl, and laughs as their red ball hits a bystander. It is 1982, and Cho does not yet understand that she had the misfortune to be born a girl in a world that loves only boys.

Cho's brother is born six weeks later, on a leaky boat in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. For this little emperor, they flee to England. She watches him breathe, and keeps one eye trained on him for the next eight years.

Cho pretends to sleep when her parents fight. She covers her brother's ears so he need not hear words like "fails to show" and "waste of money" and "amount to nothing."

As people in bright robes whirl past, Cedric pulls her into a corner. He kisses her shoulder, and Cho knows she never wants him to leave.

Cho knows death, and when she cries for Cedric, her tears are fat and full of shame.

Her mother owls every day. "We love you," her mother writes, and "come home." Cho reads "get up," in the sweets from her brother, and "you shame us," in her father's silences. She ignores them.

As tomorrow becomes next week and next week becomes next year, Cho will not understand why her tears continue to fall.

The War is over. Cho is uncertain. She is unafraid.

cool. i got the sms-age but was at lunch with people so couldn't respond just then. I wasn't sure if you had opened etc because I'd heard nothing about the contents. Can Olivia live with you?

We would be delighted to have Olivia live with us.

I meant to chat about the contents, perhaps in my lj, but then I got distracted. I do that a lot.

YAY! Home for Olivia!

I wasn't meaning to sound all "Biotch! Why didn't you sms me and shower me with love and affection for sending you presents?!!!?!?!?! *outrage*" I just wasn't sure if you'd actually opened the parcel or not.

oh look! a bumblebee! *giggles and runs off*

if it's not too impertinent to ask, did you do the mandarin translation yourself? with pre-existing command of the language or with an online dictionary/translation device?

I translated it myself with pre-existing knowledge, but Mandarin is (obviously) not my first language; before it come English and Cantonese. Some comments were made here about the way I'd mangled my translation - in an attempt to not sound colloquial, I messed things up a bit, I know. :o)

This is about the third comment email you'll receive from me about your fics, but I'm just randomly going through your memorable fics and leaving comments on the entries, I hope you don't mind!

I LOVED that you included a Chinese translation to this. I could understand most of the Chinese and I just love how you thought to do that. Awesome.

This fic was great and I think incorporating slight Chinese history is really really fantastic.

Nono, it's awesome. I'm glad you're enjoying my fic! I love Cho so much, and what she could be and what she is and all of that, so.

Can I ask how you found your way to my fic?

Hmm, good question. I think I was looking at my own userinfo (how humble, I know) and I clicked on the Robert/Katie interest I had listed and I found the community [livejournal.com profile] quiet_charm and from there, I found your Robert/Katie fic and then for the rest of your fics I just dug through you rmemories :)
