in the lane, snow is glistening

hahaha OH

(translation: 38C = 100.4F)

I do not envy those of you with your fires and your snow and such. I love a late December where I step outside and my skin prickles from the heat. I await the pre-dawn coolness; the sweltering heat of the day; battling with the flies; backyard cricket; fresh grapes and watermelons and a mid afternoon swim.

Last week several people at work commented that they do not feel that Christmas can be so soon. I suggested that perhaps it was the coolness in the air: for me it is integral to this festival.

is where you find it

Yuletide assignments are out. If you are my author, you can find my letter here, I wrote it last week.

**

There have been some yuletide icons floating around that people have made, and recently there has been a lot of discussion of assumed knowledge and of 'cultural norms,' some of it related to yuletide and some of it not. [livejournal.com profile] chomji posted some icons here earlier in the month, and I recall there was some concern that some people might be upset over the Hanukah icon. The thing is, whilst the whole secret santa concept stems from the Christian/Christmas thing, everyone's yuletide experience is different. During the yuletide kerfuffle, someone commented that they always explicitly ask for no Christmas stories when requesting their stories. It had never occurred to me that people might ask for Christmas stories during yuletide.

My December 25th: I wake up and sulk that the stories don't come out until at least GMT -5, and since I'm at GMT +8 that's a long wait. Usually my partner and I meander out, blinking in the bright, early morning light. We sit under the patio at his parents' house, coughing as my partner's father burns stuff on the barbie and contemplating a morning swim. We go up to visit my parents, who love giving presents for a million reasons, and use Christmas as a reason to spend a ridiculous amount of money (second only to the amount of money they spend at Chinese New Year). We meander home. Sometimes we sms friends, see if anyone is up for a visit to the beach.

Then I get to read the yuletide stories.

The point of this is that when people post their yuletide icons, I'm kind of like, stars and snow, that's great, whatever. I've blogged previously about this dissonance, people talking of snow all the while I'm sweating like mad. So, like a dork, I rummaged through some of my photos from last year, and have made some yuletide icons that are far more relevant to me than those usually are. I would love it if anyone wanted to use these (if you do, please comment to let me know), but I understand if they're not really your thing.

Also, I don't want to encourage the stereotype of Australians and bright sunny days and beaches and things, but this is what I do December through January, I'm not going to lie, so.

I'm not cutting, because there's only eight of them.

and i'm so sure that there are better choices than this

I just signed up for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. I like to get it done early, so then I can forget about it until assignments come out. If you have never done yuletide, you should perhaps consider it! It is solely for rare fandoms, though the definition of rare is somewhat convoluted. The fandoms I have requested are Children of Dune, The Pretender, Love Actually and Narnia. Beneath the cut you can find my "letter to my writer" because if I don't write this now, I'll never write it.

Dear Person Who is Writing for Me )

ONCE AGAIN I forgot to nominate 'The Cutting Edge,' what the hell? I do this to myself every single year. So I need to remember to nominate this next year. Also next year, I think I might also nominate 'Dune - tv' so I can request Feyd/Irulan and their craziness, and their desire to take over the universe.

FOURTEEN people have offered to write The Pretender. Who are all these people, and where are they normally? NINE people have offered to write Children of Dune. Write more fic outside of Yuletide, people, seriously. SERIOUSLY.

There is an entry: "RPF - Spicks and Specks." I REALLY want to know what people have picked for that.

I know I'm going to regret it, but I just signed up for Multiverse 2007. YOU SHOULD TOO. The sign up post is here. How could I resist when the fandoms included Roswell, BSG and Dune? I COULD NOT RESIST.

Sign up right now, if you're going to. I believe sign ups close today.

the shivers you couldn't shake

My remixee this year was [livejournal.com profile] liminalliz. I feel like I really dropped the ball on this one: Lizzen and I are compatible in so many fandoms, and I love so many of her stories, and, as someone who occasionally betas for her, there are often things that I want to change about them. And instead of doing something that would really challenge me as a writer, I wrote about Lucy and Edmund, something that I have done several times before.

When I write, I write for myself but I would be lying if I said I didn't write for my audience, too. With Remix, one's audience is both no one and everyone. [livejournal.com profile] musesfool posted last week about the lack of comments on her remix fic, and how she wished she could put her name to it so she could get more comments. But this lack of immediate gratification that means your story really has to work for it is something that I wish I was able to take more advantage of. By which I mean, writing something experimental, something awesome, that isn't constrained by your name and the image you build for yourself. I never do take advantage of this, though.

I suffer from this problem when writing for Yuletide, too: my anonymous fication stories always have no substance, no point. They're always straight-forward narratives, a well-trodden path of words. The one year I experimented (Yuletide 2005) was worse, though, and I wonder sometimes if I should just stop with the ficathons. Every year I think it will be my last, but the idea that this year might be the year I write something amazing is too much for me to resist, so I keep trying.

This year I had added dilemma: as previously stated, Lizzen and I share so many fandoms, and so many pairings, that many of the paths I could take from Lizzen's fic are paths down which I have already trodden. I wrote about Edmund and Lucy for Lizzen; I twirled that element of Lucy&Edmund that I love, wrote about Susan though I forgot about Tumnus; wrote of the naughtiness of Cor and Corin because she loves that, and I could because I KNOW that she loves that but I've written all of those things before. And I never thought that could come back to bite me in the arse, but it did.

I LOVE YOU LIZZEN

remix redux

The fic I received for Remix Redux: Can't Get Too Close (The Just Can't Push You Away Remix). It's a remix of The Closer You Get, a Michael/Maria Roswell roadtrip fic. And it's cool! The thing I love about remix is how someone takes something, just one line sometimes, from your fic, and reworks it into something cool.

The bad is that it's late Sunday night and I STILL can't reveal which fic I wrote, because I live in the future. UGH.

a pimp: remix redux

Just a reminder that signups for [livejournal.com profile] remixredux are open over here. If you don't know what a remix is, or how the remixredux works, you can learn all about it in that post.

I don't know if I'll get my XMM fic finished before the end of signups, so I might not make quota for that, but that's not important. If you write The Pretender (and can make quota), PLEASE sign up for remix. I would love to write Pretender, but cannot if no one else signs up for it.

I would love to write Dune also, but let us be honest, I don't think anyone else has written 5+ Dune fics. :o( Oh my poor fandom.

unbind my feet

This is a listing of fics for the (mini) Pretender ficathon! There are a few missing, but I guess they'll sort of trickle in, so be sure to check back to see if the list has been updated!

[livejournal.com profile] anr wrote for [livejournal.com profile] permissionslip: Child's Play. Prompt: porn, sunrise, and red pumps.

[livejournal.com profile] bantha_fodder wrote for [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch: Palindrome. Prompt: Miss Parker/ Jarod - with an appearance by Mr Lyle, some kind of intervention from him. Twincest is awesome if you feel like going down that road...*g* and no happy endings.

[livejournal.com profile] blademistress wrote for [livejournal.com profile] daygloparker: Some Disassembly Required. Prompt: Miss Parker/Jarod, clicking, opposites, no torture, no post-IotH, no mushy

[livejournal.com profile] familyarchives wrote for [livejournal.com profile] juliefortune: Waffles in Idaho. Prompt: Jarod saves Ms. P from a fate worse than...

[livejournal.com profile] juliefortune wrote for [livejournal.com profile] familyarchives: Rain Runs Cold. Prompt not specified.

[livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch wrote for [livejournal.com profile] blademistress: The Home Fires Are Burning

[livejournal.com profile] daygloparker wrote for [livejournal.com profile] anr: If Strangers Meet. Prompt not specified.

[livejournal.com profile] zeplum didn't write for anyone, but she DID write all the same: The Lonliest Valentine, a post ep for Gigolo Jarod.

In other Pretender related news, you should all know that [livejournal.com profile] medie has made some FABULOUS icons that you can find here.

In other Pretender fic news, you should all read five things: cinq mots que mlle parker a appris dans sa lycée, which is five words Miss Parker remembers from high school French, by [livejournal.com profile] quasiradiant, and it is awesome! Tahlia especially will appreciate this one.

[fic] palindrome [the pretender] [miss parker, jarod, lyle]

Palindrome by Pen
The Pretender, rated M. Miss Parker, Jarod, and Lyle.

this was written for [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch, who requested Miss Parker/ Jarod - with an appearance by Mr Lyle, some kind of intervention from him. Twincest is awesome if you feel like going down that road...*g* and no happy endings.

With thanks to [livejournal.com profile] anr, [livejournal.com profile] zeplum and [livejournal.com profile] daygloparker. Sucks to be CGB, though, because she likes plot and I'm terrible at that sort of thing.

This may possibly not make sense. I'm just saying.

bsg/crossover ficathon: a list of fics

This is a list of fics from the BSG/crossover ficathon! The list is very small, and as you may or may not recall it was a recipient-less ficathon, which I think impacted on participation and pike-rate. But if you still want to write something, it is not too late! Because BSG is the most awesome show to crossover.

I will be updating this list as people link me to their fics.

That's it! Stories are due August 24th. No word count minimum.

Because you're not writing for a specific person, once you've claimed a prompt, feel free to modify it slightly if you need to. You know. This is a pretty laid back ficathon. OR, if you really want to write a crossover, but none of the ones here take your fancy, write a crossover anyway not based on these prompts and I'll include it in the masterlist at the end of it all anyway. Because the point of all this is to get more crossovers written in BSG, not to write gifts for other participants (unlike many ficathons, is what I mean) (not that I'm bagging those sorts of ficathons! They're great, too!).

For [livejournal.com profile] tab_a_slot_b. Prompt 018: Lex is a criminal mastermind and Chloe is his head of security. Lex isn't obsessed with Clark and Superman, it's the other way around, and Chloe knows it. Clark is a total asshole to her because he thinks she "betrayed" him. PORN.

bsg/crossover ficathon: the giving of the prompts

BSG/Crossover Ficathon: part one, or the giving of the prompts.

Okay! I guess we may as well get started. In this post, please leave fic suggestions/prompts for crossover pairings or situations that you would like to see. This is a no obligation opportunity - you may leave a prompt (or two or three, but don't get carried away with stupidity), and you are under no obligation to then pick a prompt at a later date.

When I say crossover pairings, I don't mean that you have to suggest a BSG character/crossover character or anything. You can suggest, for example, Sarah/Heather from Big Love in the BSG universe. Or, you could suggest Kara/Batman. Or you can just leave a lyric prompt, or a situation prompt. Whatever you'd like to see. This is a list of crossovers that I know about (current last year), and this is a list of BSG/crossover recs that I made recently.

I'll accept prompts until June 30th, and when I say June 30th what I mean is June 30th in Western Australia. On July 1st I'll post the list of prompts, and THEN people can claim the one(s) that they would like to write. After that, people can post their fics whenever, but the final due date will be the 24th of August, because this is a low pressure ficathon.

But please pimp it, because everyone loves a good crossover. Right? RIGHT.

Any questions should also be asked in this post.
