1.
She waves for a taxi that never even slows down.
It splashes dirty water on her pants, though, and the rain falls heavily upon her shoulders. Umbrellas are expensive, and some bastard at the office stole the last three that she bought.
She keeps on walking.
2.
She sits in the City Library, going through microfilm after microfilm for the tiniest scraps of information that no one she talks to can ever seem to give her. She makes notes and references, and when she reads about how Luthor's New Project Creates New Jobs from an edition that's twenty years old, she breathes out like she's surprised, and keeps scribbling.
She pushes and she pushes. She works harder than anyone else: walks the streets of Metropolis and cultivates sources on every corner; takes the crap stories that no one wants but still need to be covered; researches until the sun is starting to rise and the rings under her eyes are dark and black. She works fucking hard, and it's never enough.
She never knows the right people. She never greases the right palms or cuddles up to the right warm bodies, never dances at the right parties, and she knows it.
3.
She goes on a holiday to New Orleans. "Fancy going to Carnivale?" Lois asks, and gives a little grin.
"It's the atmosphere," lies Chloe.
"Have fun!" Lois waves as Chloe closes the car door and grips her luggage. "I hope you get laid!"
The man sitting in the aisle seat on the plane offers it to her when she gets a cramp in her leg. "It's okay," she says, "I'm used to it." He tells her about his son and his daughters, and how he left New Orleans fifteen years ago but damn if he doesn't dream about it every day.
She watches the sun set through the clouds, and thinks about how much this flight is costing her. Thinks about how she wishes it really was a holiday.
She stashes her luggage in a bus station locker and heads down town, opposite the flow of traffic. The hall is closed, of course it is, but the man she wants to talk to lives on a bench behind it, so.
The alley behind the hall is empty, and frowns as she hears footsteps behind her.
"Here for a holiday?" Lex Luthor asks, and she turns.
"For business," she replies, and he smiles.
4.
She accepts Lex Luthor's offer.
5.
Chloe slowly chips away at Lionel Luthor's carefully covered tracks. She does it because she hates him, and because the world deserves to know what a bastard he is. His face permanently behind bars is all the reward she wants, but her bank account slowly fills with deposits from a small IT company, and she does not complain.
6.
Lex holds his breath as she gives her order to the waiter. After he is gone, "I am a patient man, but this game bores me," Lex says to her.
"Don't complain to me," she replies flippantly, and fiddles with the silverware. "But if we don't bring your father down, I'll kill you in your sleep."
7.
Lex Luthor's Secret Plans For Metropolis: Philanthropist or Parasite? the headline reads in a font so large it almost obscures the Chloe Sullivan hiding beneath it, but Chloe presses her thumb to her name and smiles.
8.
She's not sure how they can talk to her without seeing the huge LIAR emblazoned across her chest, but Lois hugs her happily and Clark's always had who he is emblazoned across his chest, so.
At a party held to celebrate her exclusive, she meets Sam Sanderson, a man with too much bling around his neck and his fingers in too many pies. "I hear you're the girl to see about Lex Luthor," he says, and she smiles at him.
"I don't know what you mean," she says. "I've never even met the man."
Sam laughs and throws his arm across her shoulder. "Chloe," he begins. "May I call you Chloe? The good men and women of this city, we do not always see eye to eye with Lex Luthor or his father. And they would love to meet with you."
His hand falls from her shoulder to cup her ass, and she lets him.
"Sam," she says with a laugh, "I would love to meet your friends."
9.
She fights with Lois.
"What are you doing?" Lois asks.
"I wouldn't expect you to understand," Chloe replies.
"What is there to understand? You don't come home and you don't go to functions, and when you do you're laughing with freaking mobsters!"
"You can swear, Lois," says Chloe, willfully not addressing Lois' point. "No one's going to care."
Lois moves out of their apartment, and into Clark's.
Chloe just moves out. She hated the colour of the walls, anyway.
10.
Her new apartment is owned by a small building company, and she never pays rent.
She paints her own fucking walls, and when Lex turns up, she paints him, too.
11.
She has a mobile that she never leaves behind. It looks identical to the mobile her father bought her when she left for Metropolis, but only one person has the number.
He calls her all the fucking time, too.
12.
"My father's coming to Metropolis," Lex says.
"Oh, great," says Chloe. "I love it when he does that."
13.
Sam breathes cigar smoke into the air.
"You know, those things will kill you," says Chloe, and the air is filled with laughter.
"Oh, Chloe," he says, and his hand tightens around her waist. She feels his fingers stroking the satin of her dress, and focuses on the grin Lex gave her when she informed him that she'd spent three thousand of his dollars on a dress she thought was ugly.
Molly, whose father is the police commissioner, takes the cigar from Sam's other hand. "Daddy Luthor's coming to town tomorrow," she says with a grin.
"I'm surprised," says Sam. "He's not on very good terms with his son."
"He's not coming for his son," says Molly. "He's coming for that little girl he has hidden up town."
Sam rolls his eyes. "An underage mistress? That's so last century."
"I thought Lionel preferred boys," says Chloe.
"He's non-specific," says Sam. He pauses. "Perry White coming this way. Look like upstanding citizens, my friends," he says, and everyone laughs. He squeezes Chloe's ass, and leers at her breasts. "You'd best be off, dear Chloe," he says. "We know how much Perry dislikes you."
She waves at Perry as she backs away, and keeps the smile on her face until a hand wraps around her wrist and yanks her around a corner.
"What are you doing?" he asks, in the darkness of the hallway.
"I'm making nice with the locals," she says slowly, like he's a moron. She tries to push him away, but his grip on her wrist tightens. "And let go. If they think we're friends, it'll blow my cover."
"You were supposed to ingratiate yourself with them, and pump them for information. Not whore yourself!"
She goes to slap him with her free hand, but he catches it and pushes her wrists against the wall.
"Let go of me!" she hisses.
"Stop whoring yourself," he hisses back.
"What do you care?" she asks. "I'm getting the job done."
"There are other ways," he says.
14.
In the darkness of a hallway, at a party attended by Metropolis' richest and most influential, with the moonlight streaming through the curtains, Lex kisses Chloe. His breath is hot on her face, and his hands around her wrists hurt, but when he whispers, "Don't whore yourself. There are other ways," she closes her eyes and kisses him back.
With his hands he crumples the satin dress that she hates so much, and the way he crushes it between their bodies as he pushes into her means the dress will never be the same. He slides a hand between them and when she comes she bites the flesh of his neck.
15.
She laughs. "Nice hickey," she says, and he runs a hand over his scalp and adjusts his tie.
"Come home with me," he replies, quietly.
"Way to blow our cover, Lex," she retorts.
"Oh, you know we've got him," he says, and she smiles.
"Yeah," she says, "We do."
16.
She goes home with Lex Luthor, and when she gets fired from the paper it's like watching a dream die, but she has more noble goals now, so it's for the best.
17.
Her father doesn't understand, and it breaks her heart.

Date: 2006-07-07 08:31 am (UTC)And I really liked this:
She's not sure how they can talk to her without seeing the huge LIAR emblazoned across her chest, but Lois hugs her happily and Clark's always had who he is emblazoned across his chest, so.
Also, damn sad at the end - even without knowing who you're talking about. :)
I think you should get into Supernatural and write me fic. Or write me Rodney fic. Or Sports Night! Or Nip/ Tuck - see? I'm giving you options. :)

Date: 2006-07-11 01:11 pm (UTC)I've tried to get into Supernatural. I admit, though, that I only saw the first episode, and that we were only watching it during the ad breaks in the Victoria Secret Fashion Parade, so I wasn't really paying attention to it so much.

Date: 2006-07-12 03:39 am (UTC)Supernatural versus the Victoria Secret Fashion Parade - that must have been a tough contest. If only Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles were wearing women's underwear... hmmm...
I expect Sports Night fic though. :)
