A Glimpse in Mirrors, by Pen
Law and Order: SVU, Huang, G.
**
It's always busy, and he's stuck at his desk for hours, reviewing cases and making queries. He looks up at a clatter of feet past his door; there's no one there, but he glances at the time and it's late, he's running late. He drops home first; the black shirt he put on without thinking is completely wrong, and after minutes of frantic searching he finds a clean shirt. It's green, but it will do.
He stands in front of the fruit stand, and studies the orange in his hand. It's imperfect, but he's late and he has yet to pick one, let alone two.
Later, when his mother answers her door, he smiles at her. "Kong hee fat choy," he says, the tones all wrong, and she laughs; kisses him on the cheek and gives him ang pao for his effort.
"What do you have there?" his grandmother asks in greeting. He hefts the oranges in one hand, and she frowns. "You are no guest!" his grandmother shrieks, and berates him until he blushes.
