Your Posture in the Celestial Realm by Pen
Firefly, Mal, G.
**
They're halfway through the meal before he notices that he's down one member of his crew. "Ain't your sister going to be joining us, Doc?" Mal asks. Simon looks around.
"I can't imagine," he starts, but pauses as River wanders into the kitchen, her arms filled with lanterns. "There you are, River," Simon says, as she drops a lantern in front of him. She deposits one at each plate, and Mal counts the days.
"We fifteen days along already?" he asks.
Jayne whines. "It just figures you'd be into this sort of thing," he grouses, and Kaylee punches his arm.
"Don't you be mean," she says. "I think it's great. I ain't done this since I was little."
Later, they trail through the ship, their lanterns lit and dangling before them, and the shadows lengthen and pass them by. Kaylee chatters merrily at River at the head of their little procession, and when he glances across, Inara smiles at him.
Well, he thinks, it can't hurt, and hopes the light keeps the bad spirits away, even if they've no old moon.
