The five things meme is going around again, and reminded me that I never finished them all last time. You can ask, if you feel so inclined, over here.
five times edmund saves lucy. for lizzen.
1. "king peter," says the prince from the seven isles. "i would like to present my suit to the fair queen lucy, make her queen of all seven isles." peter looked across to his brother, and edmund smiled. "of course," edmund answered for peter. "i shall see if queen lucy is available." edmund lies, and the lie is sweet upon his lips.
2. "queen lucy," says the ambassador. "a drink?" she nods at the calormen ambassador, touches the glass to her lips. suddenly, edmund flings his arm out, ; knocks her glass from her hand and spills the liquid across the table. where it lands, it steams, and lucy watches as the wine eats away at the table cloth. "arrest that man," edmund says, coldly. "and lock him up. it pleases me to judge him in the morning."
3. they ride across the plains, the arrows flying past their heads, and lucy's beloved mount stumbles. "hyal!" she yells as she falls, and edmund turns, reaches out an arm for her and lifts her behind him. "but hyal!" she calls, but the arrows continue to fly and edmund, his heart aching, rides on. in the safety of the mountains she pushes him away, and it hurts. later, she weeps against his shoulder, for friends lost and the wars they never wanted to fight.
4. "lucy," says caspian, "won't you stay?" she smiles at him, thinks of her rooms in cair paravel and all her fond memories. in the distance, she sees her brother, his shoulders hunched in thought. "no," she says, softly, her eyes on edmund. "you are king of narnia now, and we have no place here."
in the distance, edmund's shoulders straighten.
5. she mutters in her sleep, whispered admonishments and little shrieks of disbelief, and when he can stand her discontent no more he wakes her with his hand on her shoulder. "lu," he whispers. "what's wrong?" she blinks sleepily, and he can see the monsters behind her eyes. "i miss susan," she says, "and she was there, and london burned, and oh, edmund." he kisses her forehead; wraps his arms around her and promises her sweet dreams and wonderful parties and susan, happy.
he means every word.
