Fallacies aside, what is this current fad for fake lj cuts? What's the point?

I'm guessing, in the case of things like fanfic or icon posts or whatnot, that the intention is for all the comment replies to be in one place, and/or maybe so that there's only one copy floating about in case someone tries to archive without permission.

Um . . . because a regular old link would make sense, and we just can't have that? Who knows? Maybe some people find that using a fake cut to link to fic is more aesthetically pleasing than just linking it.

It'd be more aesthetically pleasing if they actually made the fake cut look right. :P Either way I still don't see the point of going to the trouble. Seems rather silly to me.

My theory: the phenomenon is based on the indignant rage assumed by LJers when people fail to LJ-cut long rants, images, quotations etc. etc. People who have suffered at the hands of this rage are then naturally inclined to try and build up credit by suggesting that when they link to another site, they're politely sparing you the pain that would be incurred were they to cut and paste that entire website into their LJ post.

Such people should be stamped on repeatedly for two reasons: (a) they'll take it, and a good stamping is always fun and (b) they're trying to gain credit just for not being idiots. Which en't on.

Because people perceive LJ cuts as internal (correct) and faster (also correct, but only marginally unless you're on dial-up, because of the time still needed for many to load the tonnes of images that occasionally lurk behind the cut). A fake LJ cut takes you to a different page and always causes additional load time, even if it is simply to another LJ page.

I could also go on about how people like the idea of staying within a safe (sometimes!), defined community by clicking on LJ cuts. . . . But I'm a historian, not a sociologist.

OK, fine - I've been seeing some WORRISOME developments ...

Well, I mean, you've got to give the girl a break. All the sex she has with Lee is, by necessity, terribly angsty. Sometimes she wants light-hearted fun sex, and that's what she's got Helo for.

But there will be lots of Kara/Lee soon. It will be ANGSTCAKES. And also HOT. I kept blushing and giggling whilst writing it, which would have been most mortifying had anyone been around to witness it.

OMG That is the point! ANGSTCAKES. She has an unrequited crush on him, see, and in his ANGST and WOE and ANGER he fools himself into thinking he loves her, when really it's just misguided caring-ness (not a word, thank you) that he has for her. And then he realises, and lets her down terribly, because he's no good with emotions.
