hey i saw the star-trek movie

it was good, i liked it, but there were some issues

good:
  1. uhura
  2. spock
  3. uhura/spock
  4. pretty lights/cgi/etc
  5. nimoy
  6. sulu (FENCING) (ALSO MAYBE HE HAD THE HANDBRAKE ON)
  7. chekov and scotty (and scotty's alien buddy)

bad/questionable:
  1. i hate jj abrams with the fire of a thousand suns, and this movie did nothing to change that
  2. MINISKIRTS? REALLY? MINISKIRTS?
  3. TIME TRAVEL? AGAIN?
  4. probably failed the Bechdel Test
  5. after pwning at languages and the dude who had her job before, uhura becomes nothing but an aside after the action starts

now if you'll excuse me, i have to go vote, because it's compulsory here.

1. My JJ hate has subsided for the moment, which is amazing since I too hate him with the fire of a thousand suns (omg how many times did he fuck me over with his shows? one time too many :O). I think the main factor is this is that I enjoyed the movie and I avoided reading/seeing any interviews with him in it. As soon as I see his face/hear him talk, I know the hate will come back :\

4. [livejournal.com profile] svilleficrecs mentioned here that it technically passed. Hopefully if they do another movie, they'll introduce/include more female characters, or at least let them have a bigger presence. It's not a deal-breaker for me, but I think it would be nice, especially since Uhura's alien roommate presumably died in the Romulan attack.

Yeah, but it only happened so that Kirk could save the day later! So, yeah, technically, but I'm not letting it pass on a technicality.

bad stuff:
2. I have always had problems with the line "In the old days, operations officers wore red, command officers wore gold, and –" "And women wore less." " I think I'm beginning to like history..." line in DS9's "Trials and Tribble-ations" because, yeah. And I've enjoyed the eyeroll-lol you get from reading all the fic churning out of the revived fandom now that makes reference of the short skirt that the ladies wear; but HEY. C'MON. (But then – what's worse – a short short skirt, or the skin tight body suits that later Trek shows put on their ladies? I looooooove how Kira's out fit changed from the slightly awkward mannish body suit in the first few seasons to a proto-Seven of Nine catsuit. LOL. Oh Bajor.)

3. HAHAHAHAHA. The dept of Temporal Investigations got really pissed once they found out.

4. DEFINITELY. Despite the fact that Uhura is talking to her roommate initially about her discovery of OMG KLINGONS WERE ATTACKED!, she was stripping at the time.

5. IT MAKES ME SO UPSET.

4. ...and the entire conversation only existed so Kirk could overhear it and save the day later.

I liked the time travel and have avoided JJ Abrams stuff enough before to avoid having a basis for actual hate, but otherwise totally agree.

I really really loved John Cho and I was a little worried about his casting. Also, I liked the miniskirts, please do not judge me.

The miniskirts were fine of themselves. But all women? Really? Flying into battle? That hardly seems practical.

On the miniskirts aspect, the best explanation I've heard is that they were working to keep as much the same as possible from the original show to establish continuity. If Uhura wore a minskirt then, Uhura had to wear a miniskirt now (Because that and being a space secretary are the two main identifiers of Uhurafrom the series). Now that it's been established that these ARE the characters, they can basically do whatever the hell they want in the next film including (please) pants.

Ugh, I sort of get that but well then Uhura's hair was too long! Which is RIDICULOUS so really it was just a terrible excuse, and it disappoints me if that was actually why. What, like the NAME wasn't enough?

yeah, but you've got to keep some attributes too. Like Hugh Jackman and his ridiculous Wolverine hair. They worked them out of the neon body suits, but they had to keep a few physical aspects.

Plus (aside from the dress uniforms) a lot of the women wore pants. [livejournal.com profile] apocalypsos kept a tally, but it mostly seems to be a Uhura thing.

And I'm totally with you on the hair. What if it got stuck in the automatic doors? Then where would we be?
