for Sloane. Mostly for her birthday. She wanted "they go undercover and get carried away." Do you know how hard this was? DO YOU?

***

They get dressed in the crib.

"Nice earrings," he says.

"Think they'll let me keep them?" she asks.

"Not a chance," he replies.

She fixes his collar, pushes him out the door.

*

"Can you shut this man up?" Fin pleads in her ear. "I'm stuck in a van with-"

"Don't you finish that sentence, Tutuola."

Munch and Fin start squabbling, and Elliot grins. "Children," he says. "Do I need to come back there and separate you two?"

"Shit!" says Olivia, and Elliot looks at her. She turns her head. "I know that guy. Ten O'Clock. Yellow shirt."

Elliot stretches. Eyes the guy.

"Friend?" he asks.

"Perp," she replies.

Elliot leans across, grabs her around the waist. Kisses her.

She reaches her hands up, runs her fingers through his hair. Kisses him back. He nudges her until her back is against the bar. Keeps kissing her.

"Guys, do you need help?" Fin asks.

He keeps kissing her.

*

There's a tap on her shoulder. She turns, expecting to see Fin or Munch.

"Hi Liv!" Olivia is enveloped in a hug. "I can't believe it! I haven't seen you in years!" Sally, she thinks. From high school. English class. She's not sure they were ever friends. "What have you been up to? How have you been?"

"I've been good," says Olivia. She risks a glance at Elliot. He doesn't look pleased. Sally catches the glance, looks at the hands around her waist. Gives a sly grin.

"And who is this?" she asks.

"Elliot," he says, holding out a hand. "Olivia's partner."

Well, she thinks, he's not lying,

*

"This is my boyfriend Tom," they hear. Fin and Munch exchange disbelieving looks.

Instant in with the suspect.

"Of all the lucky breaks," Fin says.

"There's no such thing as luck," Munch replies, before they fall silent again.

*

"So, how do you know Edward?" Sally asks.

"We're friends with his old room mate," Elliot says.

"College?" asks Tom.

"Prison," answers Elliot.

*

Munch laughs.

*

"We were just getting ready to go," says Sally. "Party's winding down, and Edward's getting weepy like he always does."

"He's so predictable," Tom interjects.

Sally puts a hand on Olivia's arm. "Come with us, Liv. I'd love to catch up."

Olivia turns, catches Elliot's eye. "We couldn't possibly," she says, faintly. He raises an eyebrow, gives her a grin.

"It's okay, honey. I know how you love to gossip."

"Well, if you're sure," says Olivia, half to Sally, half to Elliot.

"Please." Sally squeezes Olivia's arm.

"Well," says Olivia with a tight grin. "Where are we going?"

Sally laughs and throws her arms around Olivia. "Oh, Liv, I'm so glad you agreed. We have this great apartment down town, the most gorgeous view and I've been designing it for months..."

They know the apartment. They've had it staked out for three weeks.

*

Sally waves her arms. "This is the living room," she says. When Sally turns her back, Olivia rolls her eyes. "And I designed these cushions."

"They're lovely." Olivia smiles.

"Pure silk." Sally sighs, caresses a cushion. "Here, feel one."

"Can I use your bathroom?" Olivia asks.

"Down the hall," replies Sally, nonplussed. "Here, let me show you. I tiled it myself. Well, I supervised."

"I've got it," says Olivia, and heads off. She passes the kitchen door, sees Elliot leaning against a wall.

"Lovely, but is she always this chatty?" He takes a sip from the bottle in his hand.

"No," says Tom, out of Olivia's line of vision. "She's just excited."

"Honey," she says, entering the kitchen. She assesses the situation. Tom looking tense by the stove, Elliot looking predatory. No surprises, then. "I hope you're not holding Tom up. Sally says he's a very busy man."

"Not at all," says Tom, and she'll bet a week's wages he's desperate to get rid of them. "Happy to do anything that'll make Sally...happy."

"We're having a great time," says Elliot. He slings an arm around Olivia as she gets closer, presses a kiss to her forehead. His lips are cold. "But what about you? Having a good time catching up with Sally?"

She gives a desperate grin. "The best," she says, as perkily as she can manage.

He kisses her forehead again.

*

Munch fiddles with buttons and knobs.

"You're useless, man," says Fin.

"It's not my fault this van contains faulty equipment. The electronics industry -"

"Don't give me that shit."

*

"If you'll excuse me," says Tom, putting down his beer. "Bathroom break."

While he's gone, they argue in hushed voices, his arm around her shoulders and her hand on his chest.

"This is stupid," she hisses, "they're going to notice -"

"Trust me," and she falls silent. Looks at him.

"Olivia?" Sally calls from the living room. She breaks eye contact.

"I'll be right back," she says loudly.

"We're not."

"We are," he says, and squeezes her shoulders before he lets go. "This is going to work. And Fin and Munch are right outside," he gives a tight grin, "if you don't trust me."

"I trust you," she whispers into the silence, and walks back out to Sally.

Elliot breathes out.

*

"I have," starts Munch.

"This is our guest bedroom. I bought the sheets in Spain," they hear through their headphones.

"Complete boredom, is what you have," Fin says.

*

"They're beautiful," says Olivia. She turns a bright grin to Sally. "So, how long have you been with Tom?"

"A while," says Sally absently. "He brought those paintings back from Italy. From a street dealer. He was there on business."

Bingo, thinks Olivia. "Oh?' she says. "And what does Tom do?"

"Insurance policies," Sally says, turning to face Olivia. "Liv, tell me you'll stay the night?"

Olivia freezes.

*

"Call Cragen," Munch doesn't even have to say it, because Fin's already got his phone out.

*

"Please," says Sally. "We're having such a great time, and there's this cafe down the street that has the most amazing breakfast menu. I just." Sally takes Olivia's hand. "I don't get to see people I like anymore. Tom's always jetting around, and I don't get out much, and I'd love to spend a little longer with you."

Olivia looks at Sally. Weighs up the options.

"Let me talk to Elliot," she says.

She takes him out of the apartment. They stand in front of the door. Olivia leans back as someone walks past.

"I don't think we should do it," she says. "It's too much."

"Liv," he says. Puts his hands on her shoulders. "We need to help her."

"This won't help her," Olivia protests. "Finding out I'm using her to arrest her boyfriend? Will kill her."

"You're over-reacting."

"I'm not," she says.

His phone rings.

*

"Do it," says Cragen. "We need to get this bastard."

*

Sally's so excited, she grips Olivia's hand hard, and doesn't let go until she has Elliot and Olivia comfortably settled in the guestroom.

"Do you have enough blankets?" she asks. "There are some more in the linen closet, but I can put some on this chair here -"

"We're fine," interrupts Olivia. "We'll see you in the morning." Sally's face falls. Elliot smiles at Sally to soften the blow, but she doesn't notice.

Elliot pushes the door shut, and the two of them listen to the footsteps padding down the hall and the creak of Sally's door closing. "What are you doing?" he asks softly.

"Nothing," she says. Shakes her head.

"That's not nothing." He pulls his shirt over his head, passes it to her. She tugs off her own shirt, tugs off her bra, slips his shirt on. He takes off his pants and peels back the covers on the bed. "I know you Olivia, and that's not nothing."

"She doesn't deserve to be hurt," she says.

"The sooner she gets out of this situation, the better she'll be," he says, indicating that Olivia should slide in beside him. "She's going to get hurt regardless. We may as well pull it off like a bandaid."

She turns her back to him.

*

"Should we tell them to take off their mikes?" Fin asks Munch.

"Fuck," they hear through their headphones. "Back on at 08:00, guys." Silence.

Munch switches off the recording equipment.

"We should have had them drop the mikes in the master bedroom," says Munch.

"Has anyone ever told you you're a pervert?" Fin punches Munch in the arm.

"Only my ex-wives," Munch replies.

*

"I don't want her to be hurt," Olivia whispers into the darkness.

"I'm sorry," Elliot says. Puts a hand out. It lands on her belly, and the warmth emanating from his touch is the only thing that she can feel. "We'll do all we can, but her boyfriend is a drug dealer. There's only so much we can protect her from."

"I want to do more," she says. Turns to face him. "I want to keep her safe. I want to keep everyone safe."

"That's what we do." He slides his hand around to her back and pulls her close. Kisses her forehead. "We try to help those who hurt, those who need help and can't help themselves."

"It's never enough," she says, and kisses him. His lips open to hers as he kisses her in return, runs his hands down her sides and under the shirt she wears. Pushes it up as she slides a hand into his underwear. He kisses her jaw and her collarbone, and gasps into her ear as she tightens her hand around his penis.

"Please," he whispers into her shoulder as he slides into her.

Olivia doesn't speak, but her breath hitches like she's crying.

*

When Olivia wakes, it's still dark. She slips out of bed, steps into the bathroom. After she emerges, she picks up the shirt she was wearing and pulls it back on, before getting back into the bed. As she lies on her back, Elliot curls his hand around hers.

They lie like that until dawn.

*

The speakers crackle. "Can you hear me?" says Olivia.

"Always a pleasure to hear your dulcet tones," says Munch.

"We're having breakfast at Danny's Cafe on the corner of Sunset and Third. We'll be walking."

"Bring us some coffee," says Fin. They're the first words he's spoken since waking up to Munch without his sunglasses.

*

Tom gets up from the table after they make their orders. "Bathroom," he says. Kisses Sally on the cheek and wanders off. Elliot watches him go.

He doesn't enter the bathroom. Elliot's positive.

"So, it's a gorgeous Sunday morning," says Sally. "Fun day planned?"

"Picnic in Central Park," says Elliot, rising from the table. "I'm just gonna." He stops speaking, walks away from the table.

He doesn't enter the bathroom.

He walks out the side entrance, just in time to see Munch cuffing Tom, and Fin helping a woman a couple of metres away. "Caught him in the act," says Fin with a grin. "Car'll be out the front in five. Time to go home, girls." Fin marches Tom up the alley to the street.

"You guys fine here?" Elliot asks Munch.

"You worry about Olivia," says Munch. "This'll be the highlight of my day."

*

Elliot arrives back at the table in time to hear Sally's gasp.

"Tom!" she cries, jumping up as he's pushed into a cop car. She runs outside and starts to chase the car down the street, but Olivia grabs her arm.

"You can see him at the station," says Olivia.

Sally shakes off Olivia's arm as the realisation hits. "I should have known," she cries, and takes off in a run for her apartment.

Elliot emerges from the cafe, closes his wallet and slips it back into his pocket.

"Twenty five eighty and a broken heart," he says.

"Yeah," says Olivia. Watches Sally disappear around a corner. "And it's only five past nine."

"New record."

He reaches for her.

She steps away.
