I guess you could say that this is fic, of a sort. No real spoilers past KLG, unless you've seen the episodes in question. Mostly, this is just spec, and me wasting time.

Twenty Random Facts About the BattleStar Galactica
- Everybody knows about Tyrol’s still. He likes to believe it’s a secret, and that’s something the deck crew allows him to continue thinking, but they’ve been trading the alcohol for a while now.
- Apollo takes training sessions three times a week. There are people on the Galactica that haven’t used skills they learnt in training since training, and after the thing with the Astral Queen, the Commander wants everyone to be alert and prepared.
They’re not so worried about defending themselves against Cylons, because they know that in hand to hand combat they’d lose.
Except Starbuck. - Gaeta still sleeps with his stuffed elephant. The elephant’s name is George. There was this one triad game he was in, where he lost everything, and then he had a brilliant hand and if he’d just upped the pot a tiny bit he would probably have won. He never even considered George, because no pot is worth the loss of George.
- Because the Galactica was going to be decommissioned anyway, they never bothered fixing this small crack in one of the oxygen converters. Then, what with all the Cylons, they sort of forgot about it. That will be a problem one day.
- The guys and girls in the mess love their jobs. Sure, they hate dealing with the leftovers, and washing dishes and stuff, but the gossip is great. And at least they’re not janitors.
- Nobody seriously thinks that Apollo and Starbuck aren’t frakking. There was never a pool because everyone sort of assumes they were frakking way back in the dim mists of time, and just started up again after the end of the world.
- Dee’s bored of Billy, but she doesn’t want to be alone and it’s not like she has a lot of choices anymore.
- When people don’t want to frak in the barracks, there is a stairwell on the port side. Nobody uses the bottom level of the stairwell, and off the left of the stairwell is a storage cabinet. It used to be empty, but about a month after the end of the world a mattress and a box of tissues appeared in the room, and there’s a length of rope you tie on the door when it’s in use.
- There are other things to do on Galactica if you don’t want to frak, gamble, or train. Sleep, for example. Eat. There’s usually a game of “never ever” going on in one corner of the mess, but more often than not that degenerates into drinking and frakking, so.
- Eyes above the chin at all times in the shower.
- Cally misses swimming. She used to miss the rain, but then she spent time on Kobol, and she got over it.
- Tigh is really, really, really bad at sharing.
- There is a black market trade going on between ships, and between people on the Galactica. The most popular items are books, music, lollies and cigars. Number one used to be booze, and that is still number one ship to ship, but on the Galactica everyone just cozies up to the deck crew, so it’s less traded now. Nobody trades socks and clothes – what with so many dead, everything was pooled together and there’s a bit of a surplus now.
- Baltar’s lab is strictly off-limits. Partially because he doesn’t like intrusions, and partially because everyone’s a little freaked out by a guy who talks to himself.
- Mostly, though, they avoid his lab because nobody wants to walk in on him with his pants around his ankles, humping dry air. Oh yeah, Starbuck told everyone about that. Because it was HILARIOUS, if disturbing.
- There was a problem with finding room to house everyone in the fleet, as few of the ships were residential ships or had berths. But even with all the living space freed up on Galactica, civilians very rarely get to stay on it. It’s one thing to take the belongings of the dead. It’s another thing to share with civilians.
- The pilots really do believe they deserve special treatment.
- Ellen loves her husband, and shows it by making decisions for him. And trying to frak other people, because she’s young and active and he’s old. She wouldn’t want him to have a heart-attack in bed.
- Sometimes, Adama thinks about issuing an order and killing everyone. Because surely oblivion is better than this half-existence. Then he remembers Zak, and his ex-wife. Thinks about Lee and Kara and Saul and all the people he loves, and thinks they deserve a chance, even one so bleak.
- Nobody thinks they’re actually going to make it to Earth.

Date: 2005-09-20 09:56 pm (UTC)There really needs to be more fic about the day to day living on Galactica.

Date: 2005-09-20 10:44 pm (UTC)Like, on the things that happen between Cylon attacks. That aren't sex and card games, because I think we're all old-hands at writing that by now.
Also, on a similar topic, have you read The Common People fics? That's day to day living in the fleet of people who aren't main characters.

I adore the way you've thought through some of the fanfic cliches we love to read/write and gently nudged them sideways (although thank everything holy the ellen/tigh isn't written often).

This is great. I so may have to borrow this idea for other fandoms.

Date: 2005-09-21 04:47 am (UTC)11. Cally misses swimming. She used to miss the rain, but then she spent time on Kobol, and she got over it.
I sometimes forget that the first time in months they were able to breathe non recycled air, walk on the ground and see trees should have been special, but it was just horrific.

20. Nobody thinks they’re actually going to make it to Earth.

Date: 2005-09-21 06:13 am (UTC)Poor Billy. They should just kill off his character if the writers make him and Dee break up or something, because that would just be torture to watch :P

6? Um, I don't think we're even supposed to believe they aren't frakking. What with the snark and the angst and the way they can never have a conversation without being three inches from each other's faces. ;)
Lovely job.

I probably shouldn't have read this at work though - as I busted out laughing at this part.
