Empty Chairs

When the Sons of Adam and the Daughters of Eve disappeared, there was much mourning amongst the Narnians. But the mourning was random; disorganised: all their hopes and lives had pivoted around four Humans, and when those Humans went away, they were left with nothing. Their tears fell in tandem only because their grief was so great that there was no pause.

No leader stepped up to assume the role of the Daughters of Eve and the Sons of Adam. The thrones at Cair Paravel sat empty, but no dust settled as the inhabitants of the castle fought to keep them ready for when their Kings and Queens returned.

As the days became weeks and the weeks became months, the good Narnians remained draped in the black of mourning. The dark creatures from lands over the sea (not The Land Over The Sea, of course) began to amass at the borders of Narnia, searching, waiting, to exploit a weakness that the Narnians could not control.

A King must have stepped up, as you know, for how else could Caspian have later become King of Narnia? But I know not who, nor how, that King came to be. I only know that it was a dark time for Narnia, when all Narnians thought that the dark times had passed them forever.
