two breaths backward, half a step down
narnia rpf, rated pg.
omg THIS IS ALL LIES, HOKAY?

for the delightful sloanesomething, at her request. she and i pass through random pairings and fandoms, and some of this fic will make no sense unless you are as obsessed with the children of dune miniseries as we are, but WHATEVER it is still narnia rpf. i wasn't going to post this in my journal, but someone really wanted to see it, so here it is.

*

She bumps into him, arms first into his chest, as he's passing the schooling trailer.

"Oh, sorry," Anna says, and grins at him. "Guess it's those big feet."

James nods his head, sagely. "It's true. Can't take me anywhere."

Anna laughs, and Skandar pokes his head out the door. "Shut up or get back in here, Anna," he snips, and she pushes him back into the trailer, throwing apologies over her shoulder.

He rests his hands on his chest, breathes in.

*

James hears the rustle of skirts as he slouches in his chair with his eyes shut.

"Mister McAvoy," says Anna, and holds out a little recording device. "What do you think of Georgie Henley?"

"Well," says James. He opens his eyes and leans closer in towards the recorder. Closer in to Anna. "She's a bit loud, really. And terribly dirty. And to be honest, I'm not sure she can read."

He listens to the giggles from halfway across the lot. Before he can turn, he is attacked by a soft mass of little girl with sharp nails on his skin and sticky lips at his neck, and out of the corner of his eye he sees Anna, grinning madly.

"This is Anna Popplewell, bye!"

He hopes she doesn't have her camera with her.

*

He approaches her from behind, and growls into her ear. She jumps. "You left me to the tender mercies of a seven year old."

"I did," she says, and gives him a concerned look. "I thought you could manage, but if she was too difficult for you to handle, I suppose I must have misjudged you."

He slides onto the chair next to her, and leans in towards her. "I'll tell you a secret," he says in hushed tones, and she looks around.

Leans in closer. "Oh?"

"Yes," he says, and nods. Breathes hot on her ear, and she shivers. "You are a very naughty girl," he whispers, and reaches out. Tickles her. She screams and shrieks and tries to tickle back, but he is bigger and stronger and when she writhes almost beneath him and breathes out his name, he almost imagines he's touching her skin.

He stops, suddenly, and says, "I hope you've learned your lesson."

She grins at him, wide and happy and mischievous, and he forgets what he was going to say after that.

*

In his trailer, his mobile rings.

He lets it go to voice mail. Dressed as Tumnus, there is no one he needs to talk to unless they are right in front of him.

*

Her head on the couch, she tilts back and meets his eyes. "Read with me, James," she says, and her lips are full and her eyes are bright.

"Shouldn't you be in bed?" he asks, and she smiles softly at him.

"Waiting for a reshoot. Come read with me."

He thinks, Oh, I shouldn't.

He thinks, Mister Tumnus.

He rests a hand on the top of her head, and when he sits beside her she cuddles into his shoulder.

Georgie finds them like that ten minutes later, Anna half asleep as he reads huskily from the pages, and Georgie pouts. "Why are you having fun without me?" she asks, and clambers onto James' lap. "It's just not fair." James laughs and cuddles his favourite little girl, and keeps on cuddling her after she sends Anna off to her reshoots.

"You must read to me, now," demands Georgie, and he laughs and holds her close until she falls asleep and he has to ask for assistance to put her in a car to get her home to bed.

"Bye, James," she says quietly as he shuts the door, and he kisses the top of her head. He looks for Anna, but she's already wrapped and gone, and he thinks about finding a pub.

In the end, he crashes in his trailer, and in the morning the make up girls scold him for the circles under his eyes.

*

During break, he finds he's missed five calls. As he scrolls through the messages, he pages through the afternoon's scene, and thinks that maybe the next time he acts in a movie, he'll wear a shirt.

"For fuck's sake, why do you never answer your phone? You're on the other side of the world, not the other side of the fucking solar system," his sister said two days ago. He resolves to be a better brother, and thinks about returning her call, but it's not even sunrise over there, and he thinks better of it.

His agent called twice, his girlfriend once, and there's a ten second message from Jessica where she says, "Ugh, I'm drunk and I hate you. Don't shag anybody," before she hangs up.

He calls her, and when he gets her answering machine he says, "We filmed in Prague last week, and it was nothing like I'd expected."

She'll know what he means.

*

"James," says Tilda. They watch as Andrew talks to Skandar very quietly in the corner. The blue light makes Tilda look even taller than usual.

"Are you warm in that?" he asks, and she rolls her eyes.

"I'm used to it," she says. "But James." Tilda rests a hand on his shoulder, and when he looks up her eyes are serious. "I hope you know what you're doing."

James thinks about feigning ignorance, but Tilda is taller than he is, and is wearing very pointy shoes, and takes her role as set mother very seriously.

"I'm not doing anything," he says, sharply, and she frowns. "I'm not," he protests. "Don't worry."

He hopes he's telling the truth.

*

Anna leans on the back of his chair. "You've got to go be a statue now," she says, and her hair brushes his face.

Later, Tumnus holds the two girls tight, and he tries very hard to hold them equally, but he holds Lucy closer.

It's safer that way.

*

James heads for his car. Finished early, and freed of Tumnus' beard, he plays with his keys and thinks about a night in, but before he reaches his car Anna's voice draws him across the lot.

He finds her lying on the grass, still clad as Susan, her head in William's lap. "I can't believe that's the end," she says. She hugs a book to her chest.

"I can't believe that's considered great literature," William replies.

"Well, I am sorry," retorts Anna, "that I have subjected you to such a travesty."

William leans down and hugs her. "We should read something new," he says. "It's always fun reading with you." Anna hugs him back, and for a moment her face is obscured by William's shoulder. She draws back and kisses his shoulder, and the smile she gives William is like none James has ever seen before.

"It's my birthday next week," she says. "I'll be fifteen."

"I know," replies William. "I've already got you a present."

James' phone rings, and they turn to him, noticing his presence for the first time. He waves, says, "I'm on my way home, see you later guys," and they wave back.

His phone rings again. "Hullo?" he says, and turns his back on William and Anna.

Behind him, he can hear Anna calling William names for not revealing her present.

"It's so cold," says Jessica from the phone.

"You should try being here," replies James. "I'm not wearing a shirt."

"Again?" Jessica asks. "Wow, I really do wish I was there."

As he gets into his car, he sees Anna and William playing tag across the lawn.

He forgets, sometimes, how young she is.

*

On her birthday, Anna wears her hair in pigtails, and William gives her a stuffed kiwi bird. When she blows the candles out, there are so few she gets all but one in one breath, and Skandar declares she must have a boyfriend.

James remembers exactly how old she is, after that.

*

He finds her seated in her chair during a break. "Come read with me, James," she says, and smiles at him. He smiles back and shakes his head.

"You should read with Georgie," he replies, and keeps his distance. "I think she's feeling neglected."

It's just a wild guess, but when he hears the screams of delight from across the lot, he knows he was right.

He keeps his distance.

*

He kisses Anna on the cheek, a quick, perfunctory farewell, and when she turns to William Georgie pounces him and won't let go.

"James," she cries, "You must promise to visit me!" He reassures her that of course he will, and over her shoulder he watches Anna holding William tight.

He leaves without waving goodbye.

*

He's home half an hour when there's a knock on the door. Jessica leans on the door frame, a bottle of red in her hand. "Invite me in," she says, "and you can tell me all about acting without your shirt."

He laughs.

She missed him, she says.

He missed her more.

OMG. Sloane asked for Anna/James, and I tried but OMG STATUTORY.

When they were filming Children, they filmed all over the place, but mostly in that area of Europe. So it was sort of a reference to that.

Okay... how do I put this... This is the single most shocking entry on my friends list in like.. the history of the universe! OMGWTFBBQ! *gasps* YOU SHIP JAMES AND JESS??? and LETO AND GHANI??? Thank you, God, I am not alone!

I totally liked your James. The characterization was briliant, perverse and all in all he is so so perfect with Jessica.

As for the James/Anna bit, meh, I ship her with Will more because they're closer in age and it wouldn't be illegal. But hey, James is hot, she is hot... I imagine the long arm of the law won't reach them in Narnia.

You do know I'm going to be keeping an eye on your lj from now on, right?

I indeed ship Leto and Ghani and James and Jess. I have written treatises on the subject, and written fic for both pairings. You are totally not alone.

That is James as I see him, kind of blase but comfortable. And oh, with Jessica. OH.

I do not ship Anna/James. In fact I was very uncomfortable writing the Anna/James elements of this, and even though that was the requested pairing, that is how the fic became so clearly about James/Jessica. Because zomg JAMES/JESSICA.

You are very welcome to keep an eye on my journal. I am so multifandom it hurts. :o)

This comment is awesome, because that means you liked my fic for the writing and such, rather than your favourite characters getting it on or whatever, and that pleases me.

Yes James/Jessica forever!

The girlfriend's name is Anne Marie Duff, or as me and a friend like to call her: fug queen (she dresses awfully), she's soooo much older than James and nowhere near as pretty as Jessica.

You've been friended, btw :)
