In Which There Is A Movie, And Friends, by Pen
Narnia RPF, rated G.
Fic for Tris' birthday, part one: Anna/William written in CS Lewis' style. Unbetaed.
Anna sat in her chair, a novel in her hands. The chair was soft and a bright green, and had Anna Popplewell printed on it, so people knew it was hers. It was not conceit that had written Anna's name on her chair; nor was it arrogance; nor was it one of Skandar's practical jokes (Skandar enjoyed playing practical jokes, and laughing as one fell to the ground with a pie in one's face). Anna's name had been written on her chair by practicality, and by practice, for when one is the star in a movie, one often has a chair with one's own name on it.
Anna was not new to making movies, but Georgie was, and Skandar was, and when they were afraid and unsure, she held them close and whispered to them until they smiled at her. She did not envy them, young and alone on the set, and was always sure to watch out for them.
If you have been paying attention, and are not new to this story, you will notice I have not yet spoken of William, who played the fourth Pevensie child. William was not afraid, nor was he unsure, and he was not new to telling stories on camera, and when he spoke to Anna he was confident and calm. The two would often take tea together, and when each day was over the two would share a taxi home. They did not live in the same house, but when filming in the rolling hills of New Zealand (and when they filmed in other countries) they stayed in the same hotels and took adjoining rooms, and when Anna was too tired to walk up the stairs William would put her arm around his shoulders and assist her to her door, like any brother would.
But William was not her brother, and when he kissed her brow good night or squeezed her hand good morning, his intentions were incredibly unbrotherly.
That is not to say that his kisses masked an argument, or that the touch of his hand on her skin hid his ire (because if you have a brother or a sister then you will know well that siblings often argue): rather, his soft concern masked his desire to kiss her and hold her tight in the way that your parents hold one another close during the night. At rehearsals, and in costume fittings, and in front of the camera and in the taxi home at night (especially in the taxi home at night, for the darkness masks many sins, which is why you should always be careful at night, and never walk alone in the dark), William wished to push away the soft fabrics at Anna's shoulder; to kiss the small of her back and leave marks of his teeth on her skin (sometimes, leaving teeth marks on someone's skin is a sign of affection, but not something you should do whilst fighting in the schoolyard).
William was unsure if Anna felt the same way, and so he never did these things to her (it is important that you are just as considerate, when you have similar feelings for someone). Instead, he brought her cups of tea, and sat on her bed, her head in his lap, and stroked her hair as he read to her from the book they had been reading together.
It is these small things, when you love someone, that are more important than flesh against flesh and soft cries in the night, and William contented himself with reading to her, her hair silky under his hand.
He looked down at her often when he was reading, and her eyes were always closed, and her hand was always warm against his back. When he thought she was sleeping, he would close his own eyes, quietly set the book down on the bed spread, and softly fall back onto the bed, until her hand was trapped beneath him and he would fall asleep, Anna curled around him. Eventually they would wake, and find it was late enough that they had to rush back on set, and start filming again.
Once, he fell back against the sheets and held himself still as Anna pressed soft kisses into his belly. "What are you doing?" he asked, his voice hoarse and quiet. Anna trailed the kisses up his body (over his clothes) and said softly, "Kissing you, William," and smiled against his neck, and when he felt her lips against his skin his stomach jumped (not in a bad way, you understand, I just mean that he felt nervous and excited and happy all at once).
William wrapped his arms around Anna, and held her close in the night.
And the rest is a story for another time.
