The Rumble in Her Eye, by Pen.
Grey's Anatomy. Bailey. Unbetaed.
A short piece about Bailey. For Tris' birthday (part two).
Bailey stared at her interns. "Which one of you is going to look after my boy for me?" she asked, "And before you open your stupid mouths, let me rephrase that: one of you is going to look after my son for me. You have ten seconds to push one of your own into the fray." She looked at each of her interns, and none of them met her eyes. Pathetic, all of them.
"Look, I'll make it easier on you. I'll turn my back," this last said slowly as she turned, "And one of you will step forward." As she turned, she looked up and met Richard's eyes. He shook his head because he always was stupid, and when she completed her circle O'Malley stood there, eyes cast down, hands out.
"I'll take him, Doctor Bailey," said O'Malley, and Bailey gratefully dumped her son into the arms of an intern.
"Don't drop him," she said sharply, and kissed William on the head. "You be a good boy for mommy," she whispered softly to her son, and looked up at O'Malley. "You know exactly where to find me," she said, and O'Malley nodded.
"The OR is easy to find, even in space, Doctor Bailey," said O'Malley, "Plus, you know we have babysitters now, right? They're very experienced."
"They're children, O'Malley. I have to assume that, as my intern, you are trained in the care of others. I'm not wrong, am I, O'Malley?"
"No, Doctor Bailey," O'Malley stuttered, and Bailey left them there, O'Malley waving William's little hand. "Say bye to mommy," she heard him say, and waved back, just the once.
Looked around, and hoped no one saw.
Into the rabbit warrens of the medical ship Sagitteron Grace, she had no time to think about how convenient it was that here at the end of the world, they had managed to maintain a mostly working medical ship. She was flung straight into surgery.
"Mister Eckles here needs to keep away from knives for a little while," said Bailey from behind her mask, and looked up. "Stevens, why are you in here, and not suturing out there?"
"I thought that was just yesterday, Doctor Bailey," Stevens said.
"Get the hell out of my OR, Stevens. I don't need a full complement of interns when we're fugitives, and there are cuts to suture and people to help."
Stevens sighed and left the OR, and when Bailey turned back, the other interns looked suitably busy.
She scratched her chin and reached her hands back into Mister Eckles.
Damn stupid end of the world. The thirty hour shifts reminded her of her years as an intern; hell, they reminded her of her years as a resident, but she was getting old and she sure as hell wasn't appreciating jumping in the middle of surgery.
In the distance, she could hear William crying.
