So, again in the interest of how quiet the internets are today, a post of links.

My favourite Back Dorm Boys clip: 不得不爱.

Recently there was an Australian movie called Boy Town. The premise: Boy Town (population five) were a wildly successful boyband in the eighties, before they fell to obscurity. The movie follows their attempts to become successful again, and it spoofs reality television and the popularity of the modern boy band, and it's fabulous. If you have a chance to see this movie, you should, because it's very good and it's quite funny. And not in that slapstick, embarrassing way either, but in a genuinely funny sort of way. I Cry, which was the trailer for the movie, and Special Time of the Month. The songs are so awesome, the tunes are catchy and I love the lyrics - my favourite is probably 'Tough Titties,' and I really want to buy the soundtrack (I just keep forgetting to go to JB's). And I'm going to stop flailing about it now!

Something you should watch (but not if you're feeling sad): Kiwi!

Whose team are you on? Team Servilia vs Team Atia.

We've just started on season four Pretender. Sometimes, I think that Mr Parker actually loves his daughter. Lyle has this crazy hardon for his sister and for Jarod, and the next time you send me into a building that's about to explode, she says, you'd better make sure it explodes. And the boxes that Jarod leaves for her are like love letters. So a tP vid, in amongst these links: Blind, a vid by StuckHere.

OH WOW. Just as I thought I was ready to make a new header, move on from All Pretender, All the Time, I start rewatching s4 and nope. Sorry.

Yesterday was bright and hot, and today has been absolutely stunning so far. The sky is clear and blue, and the sun is uncomfortable on my skin, and there's a forecast for a light shower next week but I think summer is here, or dipping its toe in, at least.

I was at the markets this morning, picking up some fruit and vegetables. I ate a delicious mango a little while ago, in the usual manner: that is, slicing across the seed, scoring the flesh and pulling it from the skin with my teeth. I got mango juice all down my arms and on my table (as is also usual), and it was fantastic.

I know it's getting close to winter for many people on my flist, but I don't care: I want to hear about people's favourite summer recipes, all light and cool and delicious.

I'm wearing a summer dress, dark blue with giant stars printed on it, and I've got little black pears dangling from my ears.

I'll make my own post, in a bit, of my favourite summer things (with pictures); but for now, I suppose I had better finish sewing this penguin.

The world's richest source of vitamin B has been banned in the US.

I'm laughing so hard I can't stop. I think the best part of the article is:

Former Geelong man Daniel Fogarty, who now lives in Calgary, Canada, said he was stunned when searched while crossing the US border recently.

"The border guard asked us if we were carrying any Vegemite," Mr Fogarty said.

Australians are being searched in case they're smuggling vegemite into the US alkjdflakjfdlafHAHAHA.

There are other places I'd usually say this, other journals I'd use and other words I'd say, but on Monday, Steve Irwin died, and everyone was very sad. I learnt a lot about Steve Irwin this week - I was astonished at the out pouring of grief from people who aren't Australian, amazed to find out he was a Tourism Australia ambassador, amazed to find out he was considered a conservationist. And it was freaky, the way he died doing something he loved.

Just over five hours ago, Australian motor racer Peter Brock was killed coming out of a hairpin turn at a rally at Gidgegannup, a place I spent a chunk of time in as a child. He was a racing great, and he died whilst racing. And this is bigger to me, means more to me, than Steve Irwin's death. But aside from that, it's a little weird that two Australian icons died doing the things that they love, in the same week.

And I'm just posting this here because I haven't seen anyone say it yet, and yeah. I'm a big dag for liking motor sports, but who didn't like Peter Brock? I mean seriously.

Livejournal, the following is one of only half a dozen poems that I know by heart:

The Triantiwontigongolope, by CJ Dennis

There is a funny insect that you do not often spy,
And it isn't quite a spider, and it isn't quite a fly;
It is something like a beetle, and a little like a bee,
But nothing like a wooly grub that climbs upon a tree.
Its name is quite a hard one, but you'll learn it soon, I hope.
So try:
Tri-
Tri-anti-wonti-
Triantiwontigongolope.

It lives on weeds and wattlegum, and has a funny face;
Its appetite is hearty, and its manners a disgrace.
When first you come upon it, it will give you quite a scare,
But when you look again for it, you find it isn't there.
And unless you call it softly it will stay away and mope.
So try:
Tri-
Tri-anti-wonti-
Triantiwontigongolope.

It trembles if you tickle it or tread upon its toes;
It is not an early riser, but it has a snubbish nose.
If you snear at it, or scold it, it will scuttle off in shame,
But it purrs and purrs quite proudly if you call it by its name,
And offer it some sandwiches of sealing-wax and soap.
So try:
Tri-
Tri-anti-wonti-
Triantiwontigongolope .

But of course you haven't seen it; and I truthfully confess,
That I haven't seen it either, and I don't know its address.
For there isn't such an insect, though there really might have been,
If the trees and grass were purple, and the sky was bottle green.
It's just a little joke of mine, which you'll forgive, I hope.
Oh, try!
Tri-
Tri-anti-wonti-
Triantiwontigongolope.

Prompted by this post, wherein [livejournal.com profile] shadowserenity claims that there are very few Australian artists that she likes, and one of them is Delta Goodrem, I have composed a brief musicspam of Australian artists that I like. You will notice that Delta does not feature in here!

These songs come under the following headings: rock, pop, country, and drunk pianist. But they are also all Australian, which is why you get to hear and admire them now!

all my friends are fuck ups, but they're fun to have around )

in the darkness, listening to the birds singing and the kookaburras laughing, watching the sun come up. it is then that i cry for losses and sacrifices and those who came home. i cried because in the darkness, i love my country. and i cried because the old man in front of me embraced a little girl afterwards and said, "you didn't make a peep. i'm so proud of you." and i cried because friends so often give me this look, like, why do you go? and, oh, military brat like that's all it takes. and i cried because my father joined the rsl, and he's so happy, it's like this phantom thing that he was missing has been restored. and i cried because i hate wars, but i would go off to one if i had to. and they weren't sad tears, but they weren't happy tears, either. they were just tears.

today is anzac day, and i am grateful for every moment of my life.

We think of ourselves as happy and carefree and laid back, and on days like today we are that. No one hurries, we just sit out there in the sun all day, drinking beer and enjoying ourselves. And I like that we think of ourselves like that. But that's just today - most of the time we're stressed and hurried like the rest of the world, and that's just the way it is.

But we're not the same, at the same time. And listening to the fireworks and their soundtrack over the local radio station this evening, and it was all Aussie pubrock and This Is Australia stuff, it made me wish that the music they played was more Australian, as in, more of everything. Something Chinese followed by Japanese and Pakistani and Greek and English and just everything. I mean, that's the fucking point, isn't it?

Okay, whatever, my country is a hypocrite but I love it. Listen to the post. I'm such an embarrassment.

The End.

Reason why I Love My (Sunburnt) Country #693: Because yesterday's poll on the ninemsn page was, "Should Melbourne Cup Day be a national holiday?" For those of you who don't understand what that means, they were asking if we should have a public holiday so that we could sit around and watch a horse race and bet on it.

HAPPY MELBOURNE CUP DAY I LOVE YOU AUSTRALIA

"Evermore is up for Best Australian Album of the year, but I'll tell you something, they've only been in the country all of three weeks! But you can still redeem yourselves guys, if you can answer this simple question. What is the world's richest source of vitamin B?"

OMG WHAT IS THE WORLD'S RICHEST SOURCE OF VITAMIN B HAHAHA I LOVE YOU AUSTRALIA!
bantha_fodder: ([dune] in the trance - sloanesomething)
you know what i wanna buy? The White Album, by TISM. For those of you who aren't Australian, TISM are the people who brought you the bunny whom everyone has had more sex than. For those of you who are Australian, TISM were those guys in the ski masks who brought you Greg, The Stop Sign!, and one of my favourite albums in the world, Machiavelli and the Four Seasons.

i want a bunny icon. ETA: i want an icon of the bunny from the TISM clip.

i'd like to take a moment from my usual fannish ramblings to talk about the fact that my beloved footy team won the grand final. i just. WE WON. it has been seventy two years since our last premiership, and we won with a beautiful mark and a gap of four points. and i just.

i started crying when the siren rang.

and then i called my brother in law, who answered his phone, but refused to talk to me. so i talked into the silence of him fuming because his team lost, and i need to transcribe myself because i am so happy.

pen: hi. [i pause] are you not talking to me? [i pause again] well, i wasn't sure you were going to answer when i called, so hi. did you see that last mark? did you see it? WE WON. FOUR POINTS. AND I AM NEVER GOING TO LET YOU FORGET IT. have fun at work, i'll see you next week.

context: i live in perth, and everyone in this town supports the team WE JUST BEAT (the eagles). i've spent the last week with people actually dismissing me, going, "oh, she's a swans supporter" in that knowing tone. and all the radio stations were all, "here's a song to cheer up all the swans supporters" and then playing the eagle's anthem, and thinking they were so fucking funny. and you know what? we won. and i was just so happy that we'd made it to a grand final that i didn't care if we won or lost, until i spent a week surrounded by people going, "oh, you support sydney?" in this disdainful manner.

for those of you who don't know AFL, you can read about it from the perspective of an american exchange student here, an excellent photoblog of this year's easter sunday game here, and my team's website is here.

(i'm so happy about this, one icon wasn't enough. i needed to make two)

It's Anzac day today, and I'm going to talk about the things I love about Australia. Now, usually this sort of rambling would go in my non-fannish journal, in the interests of sparing you, who are only here for the fan-things, from my every day rantings. But most people who read that journal are Australian, and already know these things. So I'm posting this here, where most of you are not Australian, just in case you're interested in knowing why I love my country so much I could never be a citizen of any other.

But still cut, just in case.

i will not go quietly (i will not behave myself) )
