I think the lesson of this round up is that, if it weren't for ficathons, I'd have written practically nothing at all. This year I might try for slightly better than nine fics, that's not even one a month and that's pretty disgraceful, considering in 2007 I wrote 48 fics, and in 2006 I wrote 53. And this year there were NO CROSSOVERS, that's terrible! And only one Dune, and one Pretender fic! UGH. Quickly, suggest ideas!

My favourite was probably Unbent By Mirrors, Covering Your Eyes Against the Morning, just because Edmund is always so awesome, and I love the idea of St Lucy the Knife.

Look there are so few I am not even putting them under a cut!

BSG
Footprints on the Other Side, Lee and Kara, prompted by THAT pilots promo picture.

Carnivale
This Distance, the Words Which Pierce Her Skin, for remix. This was Justin and Iris, and they're so creepy!

Dune
This Harbour We Have Never Known, Chani in Paul's absence with an attempt at not-crazy Alia (and bonus Irulan of awesome). for yuletide.

Gossip Girl
A Sphere In Space, Without Markers. Blair and Chuck, having a lot of sex (in the limo) and fighting a lot. YEAH I DON'T KNOW.

Naaaaarnia
Unbent By Mirrors, Covering Your Eyes Against the Morning, Edmund is awesome and Lucy is like the Priestess of Aslan.
A Fragment of Cascade Stars, Caspian learning to love and lead Narnia.
A Harbour We Have Seen Before, Edmund and Susan adventuring to the wilds of deepest darkest Galma. for the narnia exchange.

Pretender
The Distance That Keeps, Jarod is psycho, and the fallout, for CGB on the event of her birthday.

Smallville
The Way of All Dragons (the hungriest friends remix). This was written as part of Px Remix, Chloe and Lex taking over the world as usual.

I wrote forty eight fics in twenty fandoms, and I was definitely, drastically less prolific than in 2006. And also less adventurous, I feel.

Favourite Fic over all:
This is hard. I've realised just in the last couple of days that I've become very unenthused by my writing of late, and I think it shows, both in the reduced number of things that I've written and the passion with which I've written them. I think it's pretty clear, however, that my love of The Pretender is still running strong, and with that and mine my favourite fic over all is probably All the Flickering Lights, because I love the idea of Miss Parker with wings, struggling with who she is becoming and who she is, and I love the image of Jarod grooming her wings, and the secret of this fic is that one day, I suspect that Lyle too will grow wings. Because hello, twins. And maybe I'll write that fic too, one day.

Assorted Favourites:
A Sweet Display of Nothingess (Of Everything) (Of Nevermind). Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson, playing tricks on one another. This story is my ode to old friendships.
Not the Wrong Girl, a story of how Chloe comes to Lex's side.
Strangest Quiet on the Street, Parker chasing Jarod across South Africa.
Lights Turned Way Down Low, Rogue joining the Brotherhood (with awesome from Pyro).
This City, The Ruins in Its Heart. Alia, trying to save the universe and break it at the same time.
Dog-Gone Days, because Phryne Fisher is an absolute delight.

Most Under-Appreciated:
I am predicting Dog-Gone Days, because very few people have read the Phryne Fisher books.

Most Fun:
Timestamps for A Refrain of the Things Behind Us, because the idea of Kara and Lee and Roslin on Arrakis is just too much, too awesome, and the idea that the thing that drives Laura is the possibility of restoring Billy with the Tleilaxu technology is just ! !!

Signups for [livejournal.com profile] rpfremix are open here. I would sort of like to sign up, but I don't have three 500 word fics in any rpf fandom. I've got two in a couple (in Narnia, and in BSG), but not three. So if anyone has any ideas for anything that I can write in the next couple of days, that would be great.

Speaking of, [livejournal.com profile] hobviously talks briefly about why she loves RPF. <333

I wanted to say, thank you very much to everyone who said lovely things about me in the love meme. It made me feel all glowy inside. :o)

The Pretender 2001 and Island of the Haunted are available on DVD as of Tuesday. WOO.

I updated [livejournal.com profile] unproductive with 12 x Firefly recs (including crossovers) and 6 x spy fandom recs (LFN, Spooks/MI5 and James Bond).

**

I wasn't going to do this, but then I found myself reading other people's responses and reading their fic, so I thought, why not? Let me know if you do follow my links, just for my own curiosity.

Post a list of your top five favorite fics you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.

Cutting it down to just five was very difficult, and I know that five was probably just picked as an arbitrary number but nonetheless I did my very best to stick to it. I decided it would help if I only allowed myself one from each fandom, allowing crossovers to blur the lines.

The Wreck Keeps Running. Miss Parker and Jarod in the fleet, a BSG/Pretender crossover. I will never love another fandom the way I loved BSG, so bright and so fast, but there will always be a distant fondness, reminiscent of the way I feel about Roswell, perhaps. This fic, a combination of my oldest love with one of my newest loves, was self-indulgent but written with love, and the love/hate that Miss Parker and Jarod feel will continue until they're both dead.

A Restaurant with White Tablecloths, Smallville/DCU. This fic, about Chloe and her mission to find her place in the world, is kind of sordid and a little bit skanky and secretly my love letter to Gotham City. This took me months of constant picking and carving, and the end result makes me grin every time I think of it, and contains my favourite opening line (of my own fic) ever: Chloe's house phone rings, and she answers it before she realises she's never had it connected.

Out From Under (天高皇远), HP. Cho Chang, growing up and trying to fit into her own skin. There are no words that I can say to describe what this fic means to me, and every time I read another treatise on how Cho is crap, and every time I see Cho's significance and presence pushed aside like she's nothing, I hate fandom just that little bit more.

Divided, But with Half a Heart, Children of Dune. Because the years will be long, and Leto will miss his sister very much, and the twins are so beautiful and Frank Herbert was so crazy and I will admit it, I arbitrarily picked this one because I see all of my Dune fic as one long, never-ending story, even this one and this one, though they're crossovers.

Joining Hands as Nations, Narnia. Because Susan loves Narnia, no matter what, even though Aslan later keeps her away. I wish we had seen more of Susan, seen what plans Aslan had for her after her family had left the Shadowlands, because how could Aslan have loved her and cared for her and seen into her heart and then thrown her away?

BONUS: Slowly Creeping In, X-Men Movie. I love Kitty in all her incarnations, and though she was a bit too attracted to Bobby in X3 I feel that with this fic, I managed to reconcile who she was in the movie to who I see her as (ie, AWESOME).

That was very difficult.

I would not usually tag anyone, and please, if you want to do this meme, feel free! I certainly was not tagged. But I would like to see what [livejournal.com profile] hobviously has to say, and what [livejournal.com profile] voleuse has to say, and if she ever comes back to us, I would like to see what [livejournal.com profile] stars_like_dust has to say.
bantha_fodder: ([新年] a little red lantern)
Some time ago, [livejournal.com profile] hobviously issued the non-Anglo/Western/Mainstream holiday Challenge, though it (alas) didn't actually happen in the end.

This was both an answer to that challenge, and something that I did for myself: fifteen short pieces about Chinese New Year. They ranged from 100 to 600 words, and I link them all below.

I originally tried to do this in 2005; I failed along the way, because I was writing them on each day, which was why I wrote (most of) these ones in advance. Best to be prepared, I suppose. I reworked some of the themes from the 2005 drabbles into some of these ones, but I have disclaimed that as necessary in the notes of each fic. There weren't that many of them.

I would like to think that I managed to convey everything about New Year that I wanted to, but of course I didn't. I was limited by the characters that I picked, and the situations that they were in.

I'd like to thank [livejournal.com profile] annavtree, [livejournal.com profile] zeplum, [livejournal.com profile] fox1013, and [livejournal.com profile] cupiscent, for their assistance as required. All mistakes are my own; the characters are not.

That Small Circle of Light in the Night Sky: a collection of fictions in regards Chinese New Year

  1. On Not Knowing the Way, Stick It. Mina Hoyt, at a New Year's Eve Reunion Dinner.

  2. Show Me The Way (to go home), Space: Above and Beyond. Paul Wang, frightening away the bad spirits.

  3. Just the Ticket to Ride, Kill Bill. O-Ren Ishii, scaring the bad spirits/honouring the dead.

  4. One Among the Hundreds, Harry Potter. Cho Chang, honouring the dead.

  5. So Close to Bedrock, Phryne Fisher Mysteries. Phryne, on not being Chinese.

  6. With the Lights Left On, The Pretender. Jarod and Miss Parker, strangers amongst the celebrations.

  7. A Garden, Disturbed by Echoes, Eating Chinese Food Naked. Ruby, brooms and that feeling you get when you realise you're not who you're supposed to be.

  8. A Glimpse in Mirrors, Law and Order: SVU. Huang going home with oranges.

  9. No Uncertain Clarity, Children of Dune. The twins and the Nian.

  10. Our Own Legends in the Silence, Harry Potter. Charlie, for the dragons.

  11. Sun-Drenched in a Winter Storm, The Joy Luck Club. June, on the Chinese diaspora, and the family we end up with due to the decisions our mums made.

  12. The Great Muppet Chinese New Year, The Muppets. Kermit, a summary of the events that have come before.

  13. On the Same Wave, X-Men. Jubilee, and the new years that we have left behind.

  14. Just Like a Hundred Times Before, Blade: Trinity. Hannibal King, hunting the bad spirits.

  15. Your Posture in the Celestial Realm, Firefly. Mal Reynolds and the lantern festival.

And that, my friends, is just about the end of the new year festivities. I'm just on my way out for one last family thing, so have a good one, and thank you for indulging me.
bantha_fodder: ([plastics] lots of porn - baggers)
I wrote fifty three stories in twenty two fandoms - that's thirteen less stories than 2005, but in more fandoms.

Favourite Fic over all:
Ooh, this was a hard decision, but probably The Wreck Keeps Running, a Pretender/BSG crossover.

Assorted Favourites:
Blood Like Holy Wine (constant in the darkness) - the beauty of infidelicious pilots.
Silence in the Revelation - a Pretender/Dune crossover. Parker and Lyle on Arrakis.
All Messed Up (in a trusted wreck) - PotC, Anamaria and Norrington between CotBP and DMC. I tried so hard to make it conceivable that they knew each other, that they worked together, and I was really pleased with how this worked.
An Upside-Down Vision. Edmund, the Just.
Slowly Creeping In. Kitty Pryde, after X3.

One I'm Really Pleased With:
In Which There Is a Movie, and Friends, because it was Anna/Will written in the style of CS Lewis, and I think I just about managed it, too. I would quote my favourite line, but it is too long, so I shall quote my second favourite instead: At rehearsals, and in costume fittings, and in front of the camera and in the taxi home at night (especially in the taxi home at night, for the darkness masks many sins, which is why you should always be careful at night, and never walk alone in the dark), William wished to push away the soft fabrics at Anna's shoulder.

Most Under-Appreciated:
New Bonhomie. This was a Smallville fic written for [livejournal.com profile] tab_a_slot_b, the Smallville het challenge, and not even the person who issued the prompt commented on this fic, which, ARGH.

Most Fun:
The Pilot Bride. Crackfic based on The Princess Bride.

Okay, so, there's this meme going around, where you talk about the fic you've written in the past year. And people have been doing it for the last two, maybe even three weeks, which makes no sense to me because here I am, posting it on the first of January, and I wrote and posted another fic just yesterday! So, you know. Good thing I waited.

This includes a reveal of my yuletide fic, because the names are up, now.

Because I posted a bazillion fics, I have decided to start with a sampling. If you are new to my journal, I recommend the following:

Favourite Fic over all: A Restaurant with White Tablecloths. This is both my favourite, and I believe my best. And you should all read it. It is Smallville/Gotham City, but it is so much more than that to me. Not to sound weepy, but I am ridiculously proud of this fic.

Assorted Favourites:

That I Should Suffer. Kara and Lee and the ways they survive. I love this fic because it was one of my very first BSG fics.

Divided, But with Half a Heart. Leto and Ghanima. I love this fic so much, so, so much. Dune is one of my favourite pieces of literature, I do not know why, and I rewatch the Children of Dune miniseries all the time.

Out From Under (天高皇远) I love Cho Chang. I don't understand why people don't like her, and I love her. This is about Cho, just living her life and trying to understand.

Joining Hands as Nations. Queen Susan is beloved of all the world.

Broken Glasses. Miss Parker chases Jarod again and again.

total fandoms: TWENTY ONE. number of fics excluding anything shorter than 200 words: SIXTY FOUR OMFG. *demands a recount* )
bantha_fodder: ([smallville] chloe and lex)
I'm going to talk about Chloe/Lex, and what I've written about them, because there was some discussion of it over here, and people asked, so.

Stuff I have written:

The first piece of Chloe and Lex I wrote was Banking on the (good)Will of Others, for someone random's wishlist. It is not Chloe/Lex, but it shows quite clearly the beginnings of their relationship, and how clearly it is that Lex holds the power but Chloe is not powerless.

Not Consolation but Distraction was a tiny little thing, another piece of speculation about how Lex convinces Chloe to even talk to him, let alone work for him.

I'm obsessed with crossovers, and Almost Free to Come and Go is Chloe and Lex in the Colonies after the Cylons come.

A Firm Grip on Reality was something I wrote because Sloane wanted to know what happened after the S4 finale.

And the thing that I am most proud of writing ever, A Restaurant with White Tablecloths, a Gotham City/Metropolis crossover. I finally finished this just last month, and I love it so much. I am so proud of it. Stupidly proud of it.

This is a list of my very favourite Lex and Chloe fics written by people who are not me.
